CARL R. KLOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR, BY 'MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO UNITED TABLE-BED COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF VIRGINIA.
FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent- Patented Sept. 17, 1918.:
Application filed January 16, 1914. Serial No. 812,530.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. KLoK, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Chicago, Cook county, Illino1s, have invented a certain new and usefulImprovement in Folding Beds, of whlch the following is a specification.
My invention relates to table beds of that kind in which the bed comprises a folding frame which is concealed in the upper portion of the table, when not in use, but which is adapted to be unfolded therefrom, by opening the table, when it. is desired to use the structure as a bed.
The object of my invention is to provide a novel construction and arrangement for extending the bed at opposite sides of the table, and whereby, when the bed frame is folded, the ends thereof will be disposed below the middle section of the same, leaving space above the frame for the mattress and bedding, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
To the foregoing and other useful ends, my invention consists in matters hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of a table bed embodying the principles of my in vention, showing the bed folded within the table.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 2-2 in F1g. 1, showing the bed extended for use.
Fig 3 is a side elevation of said table bed, with one end portion broken away for convenience of illustration, showing the bed folded within the table.
Fig. 4: is a similar view of the other end portion of the table, showing the bed unfolded.
Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 in Fig. 3.
As thus illustrated, my invention comprises a table body A having legs a, disposed at the corners thereof, rigidly connected together to form a frame having a top composed of two sections a and (1 as shown more clearly in Fig. 1. The side walls a and a are divided at their central points, and are hinged to the under sides of the said top walls at (1 whereby these side walls fold fiat-wise against the under surfaces of the top wall sections when the latter are raised to a vertical position. For this purpose, the two top wall sections a and a are hinged to the fixed end walls a and a at a and a,
thus permitting-each section of the top Wall to be raised to a vertical position, as shown in Fig. at. The walls are held in this position by pivoted braces O of any suitable character, orby any other suitable means. The lower portion of the table body is provided with removable side walls D, disposed at an angle to each other, and converging downwardly, as shown in Fig. 5. These walls engage and slide in the grooves d, formed in the end portions of the table body. The bed comprises a frame E composed of angle iron sections 6, e and c hinges 6 disposed on the under side of the frame, being used for connecting together the sections 6 and c at each end of the bed. Pivotal connections 6 are provided between the middle section 6 and the section 6 whereby the bed frame is adapted to fold up in the.
manner shown in Fig. 5. At this time, as
will be seen, the sections 6 rest or lean against the sections 6 and these outer sections are all below the middle section 6, being held in this position by the walls D, or by any suitable means. With this arrangement, the space above the bed frame, below the table top, may be utilized for inclosing the mattress F, as well as the bedding. The ends of the bed frame are provided with folding legs G, which are held in operative position by braces g, in the manner shown in Fig. 4. It will be seen that these braces are pivoted on the legs at g and detachably engage the bed frame at 9 whereby both the legs and the braces are held lengthwise along the end bars of the frame when the bed is folded. The middle section e is secured in place in the table in any suitable or desired manner;
With the foregoing construction the bed is extensible at opposite sides of the table, and by means of the inclined walls D suitable clearance is provided below the table, whereby the latter 'is adapted to be used as a library or writing table. Also, the bed is of such character that it meets the standard redownwardly folding end sections, said end sections being each composed of a plurality of pivotally connected portions.
2. A table bed comprising a table body, a movable top therefor, movable sides, and a folding bed frame having a middle section supported on said body, provided with downwardly folding end sections, said body having means for holding the end sections with their lower ends close together.
3. A table bed comprising a table body, a movable top therefor, movable sides, and a folding bed frame having a middle section supported on said body, provided with downwardly folding end sections, said body i means, there being space between the said frame and said top and between the sldes,
' said end sections being supported by said means below the middle section.
5. A table bed comprising a table body, a
" movable top therefor, movable sides, and a folding bed frame having a fixed middle section supported on said body, provided with downwardly folding foot and head sections, the sides being hinged to the under side of the top.
6. A table bed having a table body, a fold ing bed in said body, a movable table top mounted to swing about a horizontal axis,
and sides hinged to the under side of said 7 top, the said axis of the top angles to the axes of the sides.
Signed by me at Chicago, Illinois, this 23rd day of December, 1913. r
