LOCKING DEVICE FO'RQPIVOTED WINDOW-SASHES.' 7
Specificationof Letters Patent. Patenteflusept 1O,-191-8 Application filed February 12,1918." Serial Nb. 216,685, I
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that I, E BLAKE SHAND, a ciitzen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of WVayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices for Pivoted Vim dow-Sashes, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to locking devices for pivoted window sash. and its object is a simple and efficient means for locking the sash pivoted to swing on a horizontal axis to provide ventilation by locking the lower sash at an angle to the position of the upper sash providing an opening between the adjacent ends of the two sash. The particuiar features of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of the window frame and sash therein showing one of the sash locked in angular relation to the other.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the locking device.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the member engaged by the locking device.
Fig. 4: is a side elevation of the locking member.
Fig. 5 is an edge view of the member engaged thereby.
Fig. 6 is a front elevation of the member engaged by the locking device.
The locking member as shown in Fig. 2 consists of a plate or support 1 adapted to be secured to the upper rail of the lower sash of a window by means of the screws 2, the position of the same on the window being illustrated in Fig. 1. Pivotally mounted on this plate is a locking member 3 having a notched or serrated face i eccentric to the pivotal point 5. A plate 6 is secured to the window frame 7 as indicated in Fig. 1, and this plate is ordinarily covered by a stop indicated by dotted lines 8 in Fig. 1, which stop is removed when it is desired to tilt the sash to position shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The plate 6 is provided with a serrated portion 9 adapted to be engaged by the serrated portion 4 of the lock member. It is to be noted that when the sash is locked in the position shown in Fig. 1, it is securely held in place providing a space 10 between the adjacent ends of the sash allowing the desired ventilation. It'is further to be noted that, by reason of the eccentric relationship of the serrated portion 4 of the lock, the window may not be pushed inwardly from the outside as pressure exerted on the outer side tends to more securely hold the sash in place, inasmuch as the tendency would be to rotate the lock about its pivot and, on account of the serrated face thereof, being in eccentric relation to the pivot. Such movement simply binds the lock more tightly in position and thus prevents movement of the sash. From the inner side of the window, however, it is very readily released by movement of the lock, movement in the direction indicated by the arrow withdrawing the serrated face l from engagement with the ser rated face 9 of the plate 6, whereupon the sash may be brought to vertical position parallel with the upper sash and stop 8 positioned, whereupon it may be moved vertically in the ordinary manner.
It, of course, is to be understood that the sash may be pivotally supported to turn about a horizontal axis in any approved manner, the sash being centrally supported or pivotally supported at the lower end asmay be deslred.
Having thus briefly described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a locking device for locking window sash adapted to swing about a horizontal axis in the supporting frame, a locking member pivotally mounted on the upper horizontal face of the sash bar, the lock member having a face eccentric to the pivot point, a contact plate therefor secured to the window frame adapted to be engaged by the cocentric face of the lock member to secure the sash in place.
2. In combination with a window sash adapted to swing about a horizontal axis in the supporting frame, a locking device consisting of a member pivotally mounted on the upper face of a sash bar, said member having a serrated face formed eccentrically to the pivoted point, a contact plate correspondingly serrated secured at an angle to the frame adapted to be engaged by the eccentric face of the lock member to secure the sash at an angle relative to the frame.
3. 111 combination with a window sash adapted to swing about a horizontal axis in a supporting frame, a locking member consisting of a plate secured to the upper horizontal face of the sash member, and a lock member pivoted thereto having a serrated face eccentric to the pivot and a contact plate therefor positioned on the Window frame on a tangent to a circle having a radius equal to the distance from the locking member to the point of the pivoted sash, the
plate having a serrated face adapted to be engaged by the eccentric face of the lock 10 er When turned to engagement theren BLAKE SHAND.
