Description

4UNITED STATES l PATENT OFFICE.
ADAM HELLER, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
sHuTTER-FAsTl-:NER-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 542,051, dated July 2, 1895.r
Application filed April 11, 1395. Serial No. 5451311' (N0 milden To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, ADAM HELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shutter.
Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a shutter bower or fastener, and has for its object to provide for this purpose an improved device wholly independent of the ordinary hinge.
In theaccompanyin g drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure l shows part of a window and one shutter with the improved fastener. Fig. 2 shows a view of part of a window-frame, a shutter hinged thereto, and the improved bower or fastener. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the parts shown in Fig. 2 on the line 3 3. Fig. 4 is a view of part of the shutter, being an inner side thereof, and shows the fastener applied. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the lower circular crown.
The shutter A is mounted, as usual, on ordinary hinges b, securing it tothe frameV C, and which permit the shutter to be lifted off.
The bower-fastener is composed of two part-s. One part has an arm d rigidly secured to the window-frame C by screws e. This arm carries a circular toothed crown f. The other part has an inverted crown g, corresponding in shape and size to the crown fand is above the latter. Thesetwo circular toothed crowns intermesh or engage with each other, as shown in Fig. 2. The upper crown g is pivoted by a pin h to a lever I, which extends across the edge j of the shutter', and the said lever is pivoted at kon the shutter so as to raise the upper crown and disengage its teeth from` the lower crown f. The pivot 7c is secured to a plate L, and the latter is attached to the edge j of the shutter by screws m. A slot n is formed on the shutter under said plate L where the lever Ican freely work. The lever hasa laterally-proj ectin g end I', which extends crosswise on the inner side or inner surface of the shutter, and this end serves as a handle to grasp when it is desired to disengage the upper crown from the lower one for the purpose of opening or closing the shutter. A turnbutton or cam o is pivoted by a screw jp on the shutter and has position below the said lateral end I. When this cam is turned upward, as in Fig. 4, it abuts against the said lateral end I and holds the lever from moving and keeps the two crowns engaged or locked. When this cam is turned down, (indicated by broken lines,) the lever is free to be tilted for the purpose of lifting the upper crown g and disengaging it from the lower crown. The two circular toothed crowns of the bower are mounted relative to the window-frame and shutter, so that the center or axis of each crown is coincident with aperpendicular line extending through the pintle of the hinges b. By this construction of bower the shutters may belocked when closed, locked when wide open, and locked at any angle or intermediate position between entirely closed and wide open.
The device may be applied to any shutter without disturbing the existing hinges.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a shutter fastener, the combination of a hinged shutter; a rigid non-revoluble toothed crown, f, independent of the said hinges and having a lateral, plate by which it is secured rigidly to the window-frame; a plate, L, se- A cured to the edge of the shutter over a slot therein; a lever, I, pivoted to the said shutter plate and working in said slotand provided with an end which projects laterally crosswise on the inner side of the shutter; an inverted toothed crown, g, also independent of the hinges and attached to the outer end of said lever; and a turn-button pivoted on the shutter independently of the lever and adapted to abut against the said laterallyprojecting end thereof.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
