Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 3, 1918.
Application filed February 13, 1918. Serial No. 216,936.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOUIS A. HUFsoHMIDr, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Insulating-Canopies for Lighting-Fixtures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved ceiling or similar canopy and means for connecting therewith indirect lighting fixtures, chandeliers, or other fixtures which are designed to be supported from or in relation to said canopy.
It consists in the formation of a canopy of approved artistic construction, preferably of an insulating material, and means to secure it in place with relation to the fixed junction box, and means formed or connected integrally with the canopy for the suspension of an indirect lighting bowl or equivalent fixture, to be suspended at some distance below the ceiling and canopy.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view of the canopy showing the attachments.
Fig. 2 is a view of the canopy, the bowl and suspending attachments.
I prefer to form my canopy of some insulating material, but it may manifestly be made of any material suitable for the purpose and of any desired artistic form as shown.
The canopy, as here shown, comprises an extended base A adapted to rest and fit against the ceiling or other surface to which it is to be applied and in the center it is extended outward to form a pear-shaped or other extension A. This structure forms a hollow shell which is applied to the ceiling or other surface, and may be secured by bolts 2 extending vertically up through the canopy and having the upper screw: threaded ends engaging the junction box 3, which is shown as fixed within the surface to which the canopy is attached. Through the rounded lower art of the extensions of bulb A holes 4 are made forthe passage of other suspending devices 7 from the canopy.
and in order to make the proper attachment the canopy has formed with or attached to it lugs or projections 8.
These lugs are as many in number as the number of suspending devices 7 as three, four or five. These may be molded and formed integral with the bulb A when of insulating material, or otherwise fixed when the canopy is of metal or other material. The rods, cords or chains 7 are provided with hooks or other means by which these may be attached to the lugs, which are perforated for the purpose, and similarly to the rim of the bowl or other lighting device, which may thus be suspended at any desired distance below the canopy.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In an electric lighting fixture, in combination with the ceiling junction box having an opening in its bottom, a hollow canopy having a top and a central extension projection downwardly from the top, said extension being hollow and in register with the opening in the bottom of the junction box, screws extending from the top and con nected to the bottom of the junction box to support the canopy, and lugs on the extension periphery extending axially of the extension and having openings between their ends to receive suspension chains for the bowl or the like, said extension having openings to one side of the ears to receive the electric light wires so that the latter will extend from the junction box through the hollow extension and through the lug openingsto the chains.
2. In an electric lighting fixture, in combination with the ceiling junction box, a canopy having a top and a central hollow extension pro ecting downwardly from the top, fastening means for securing the canopy top to the bottom of the junction box, and lugs on the extension periphery In testimony whereof I have hereunto set formed to engage the bowl cha1ns to suspend my hand 1n the presence of two subsorlbing 10 the boWl from the canopy, salcl extension witnesses.
1 havln holes ad] acent the lugs to recelve the 5 eleotril: light Wires so that the latter Will LOUIS HUFSOHMIDT extend from the junction box through the Witnesses: hollow extension and through the extension CHAS. H. GEHRKE, holes to engage the chains. BERTHA E. LAMEE.
