UNDERGARMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
garment.
Be it known that I, MAUn I. BOLTZ, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improvement in Undergarments, of which the following is a specification. Y
My present invention relates generally to womens garments, and more particularly to womens under-garments, my object beingthe'provision of an extremely slmple gar-- .ment of this nature, both as regards the manufacture thereof and the completed article,
'Fig. 2 .is a horizontal through the body ""portion of the garment substantially on line 22 of Fig. 1. w v
Fig. 3 is a similar view taken through one leg portion of'the garment substantially on I of the garment.
Fig. 5 is a detailed perspective view of the I shown in'Fig. 6.
line 33 of Fig. 1. V 1
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the lower portion body portion of the complete.
Fig. 6 is a detailed perspective view of the crotch section detached.
Fig. 7 is a plan view of the crotch section garment cut and in- Fig. 8 is a plan view illustrating the manner in which the crotch sections are cut from the goods.
Referring now to these figures and particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, my invention contemplates the provision of an undergarment which in this instance,- I have shown in the form of a union garment, consistingof a tubular body portion 10, which in manufacture is placed flatwise in one position and out at its upper and lower portions, as
seen respectively at 11 and 12 in Fig. '5, to
form at the upper portion of the body 10, the
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented section taken Sept. 3, 1918.

shoulder straps 13, and the suitably shaped front and back neck portions, thelatter of which and the outer portions of the straps 13, are suitably finished thereafter, either with or without desired trimming. .The cutting at the lower portion of th body 10, is in the nature of diametrically opposed slits extending from the lower end of the body and upwardly for a suitable distance, depending to some extent at least upon.the size of the finished garment, these slits being in the first instance made at the sides of thebody which when partly turned present themselves at the frontand the rear as at 12 in Fig. 5, so as to result in a substantial bifurcation of the lower portion of the body 10, the purpose of which will be presently described.
. To the free edges around the lower slit of the body 10, are suitably attached the side edges 14 of an in'sertedsection 15, of hour glass form as seen particularly in Figs. 4, 6
and 7, each inserted section 15 being in one p1ece and p eferably out from a tubular section 16, as in Fig. 8, by means of patterns 17 laid at opposite sides thereof, and each of the shape of one-half of the section, so that when out, each section willihave the form above, stated and plainly seen in Figs. 4:
and 7 '1 It is to be observed, therefore, that the I;
inserted section 15 cooperates with'the bifur-v cated lower portion of the tubular body 10, when connected thereto, in such manner asto form the complete leg portions 18 of Fig. 1, and that the seams 19 necessary for the oining of the inserted sections. in place are each continuous if not I line, thus making the assembly of the parts ready and simple operations aside from any trimming, as before stated, around the neck and arm-holes, and as seen at 20, around the extremities of the leg portions l8,'which trimming is, of course, incident to every garment of this 11s desired.
the particular construction presented, by my inventlon, the intermediate portion of the intire crotch area, and being without seams, is well calculated to promote ease and comfort in use. 9
Thus, in addition to the fact of advantage to the manufacturer in the use of but two pieces goinginto the make-up of the garnature, where its presence It is also to be observed that in view of' in a wholly straight i sertedsection 15 covers substantially the enment, thecompleted article professes consid erable advantage to the wearer in its use.
By referring to Fig. 2,'the tubular construction of the body portion may be readily seen, the difference between this construction and the construction of the leg portions 18, may be readily observed by comparison of this figure with Fig. 3, which latter includes the two seams 19, necessary for the joining of the inserted section 15.
It is furthermore obvious that while I have shown in this instance, my invention in connection with a union garment, it may .with'equal facility be utilized in connection with the manufacture of drawers alone.
I claim: 1
1. The method herein described of manu-' facturing an undergarment, said method consisting in first preparing a seamless tubular web, then centrally slitting the lower portion of said tubular web at front and .rear to form divergent legs open on their in v ner sides, then preparing a flat web of hourglass shape having a length twice that of the slitted portion of the tubular web and a width in its narrowest portion s'ufiicient to bridge the crotch from front to rear, then doubling said fiat web at the center of its length, and then securing theopposite edges of one end of said fiat web tothe front and rear edges of the slitted portion of one leg of the body web and the opposite edges of the other end of said flat web to the correspondingedges of the opposite leg of the body web whereby the narrower central portion of the fiat web constitutes the closed and seamless crotch of'the finished garment and the Wider end portions of said web constitute gussets on the inner side of the legs and widen the latter toward the bottom, the 40 seams between the two webs extending along the front and rear sides of the legs and across the body in front and back of the crotch.
2. An undergarment comprising a body portion having divergent leg portions and a folded hour-glass shaped single flat web having a central portion of a width sufficient to bridge the crotch'of the garment from front to rear, said fiat web having the opposite edges of one end united to the front and rear edges of one of the leg portions, and the opposite edges of its other end united to the
