to avoid the contact of the tongue with bitter portions of the mouth-piece when smoking; to furnish a smoker with Lsingle-use covers for mouth-pieces of the charactermentioned; and to simplify the operation of installing in service, guards of the character mentioned.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a smoking pipe having applied thereto a guard constructed and arranged in accordance with the present invention;

Fig. 2 is a detail view in perspective showing an attaching ferrule employed for hold-Q ing the guard in service position on the mouth-piece of the pipe.

Description.

As seen in the drawings, the guard piece is preferably constructed of paper. A blank or body portion 11 has at one edge a gummed section 12. Asbest seen iny Fig. 1 of the drawings, the body section or guard piece is rolled about the mouth piece 13 of the pipe 14, and extends beyond the end thereof to prevent the tongue of the smoker from touching the end of said mouth piece.

W hen the yblank is rolled on the mouth piece, the gummed edge 12 is moistened and pressed down upon the body of the wrapped blank.

To hold'the tube which has been formed l by wrapping the body piece 11 upon the mouth piece 13 in active position, the ferv rule 15 with which the stem of the pipe 14 is provided has a hinge tab 16 which vis turned over the middle or hinge section of a spring clip 17 The spreadingarrns of the clip 17 are shaped to t the curvature of said mouth piece and wrapper therefor. When installing a guard in service, the clip 17 is pressed down over the adjacent end of the guard, theends of the clip-spreading to pass thereover for subsequently pressing on the sides of the guard'to hold the same on the mouth piece 13. f

While there has herein been shown the clip A17 for preventing the inflow of airbetween the guard and mouth piece, it will be understood that other forms of contracting members or devices f may be used, the purpose whereof is,'as indicated herein, to contract `the guard on the mouth piece of the pipe to prevent the flow of air therethrough.

`A guardas characterized comprising an enveloping single-service tube -formed of flexible material; and means permanently attached to the mouth-piece of a pipe for holding said tube in service position, said means embodying an attachable ferru'le, and

a spring clip` pivotally connected with said ferrule and provided with arms adapted to circumfold the mouth-piece of the pipe andr said tube thereon.
