Description

PATENTED JULY 28, 1908. 1 B.LEYH. I SAFETY DEVICE FOR GAS HOSE. APPLIOATION FILED MAR.19, 1908.
BERNH'ARD LEYH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SAFETY DEVICE FOR GAS-HOSE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 28, 1908.
Application filed March 19, 1908. Serial No. 421,996.
To all 'uihom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNHARD LEYH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city (Queens), county of Queens, State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Gas-Hose, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety device of novel construction adapted to automatically close the end of a gas hose in case the latter slips its connection with a gas stove or lamp. In this Way any objectionable escape of gas through the detached hose is effectively prevented.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved safety device, showing the hose coupled; Fig. 2 a side elevation, partly in section, of the device, showing the hose uncoupled; Fig. 3 an end view of Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a cross section on line 44, Fig. 1.
To the end of a gas hose 10 is attached by a collar 11, a flexible tubular nozzle 12, adapted to be slipped over the nip le 13 of a gas stove or lamp 14, as usual. T e safety device consists of a spring-.clasp 15, from which extend forwardly a pair of distensible arms 16 formed preferably of coiled wire springs. The outer ends of these arms are connected by pin 17, upon which is centered by sleeves 18, .a ball valve 19. Arms 16 are connected to each other preferably near their center by a resilient yoke 20 also composed preferably of a coiled wire spring. To clasp 15 is secured, between arms 16, a finger 21 having an inclined front end 22 which constitutes a sto In use, clasp 15 is slipped over collar 11, by which it is held against longitudinal displacement. When the hose is coupled, arms 16 are deflected upwards, so that valve 19 rests upon the surface of nipple 13 and against stop 22, (Fig. 1). When the hose becomes accidentally detached, valve 19 will loose its support on nipple 13 and will be drawn, by spring-arms 16, against the mouth of nozzle, 12, (Fig. 2), so that the flow of gas is efiectively checked. The resilient yoke 20 will closely hug nozzle 12, in all positions of the device, and will assist the spring-arms in drawing the valve against the mouth of the nozzle, when the hose 5 becomes detached.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a pair of distensible arms adapted to be connected to a gas hose, a valve carried by the arms, and a stop ada ted to be engaged by the valve, substantia y as specified.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a clasp, a pair of distensible arms projecting therefrom, a stop secured to the clasp intermediate the arms, and a valve carried by the arms and adapted to engage the stop, substantially as specified.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a clasp, a pair of distensible arms projecting therefrom, a stop secured to the clasp intermediate the arms, a resilient yoke connecting the arms, and a valve carried by the arms and adapted to engage the stop, substantially as specified.
Signed by me at New York city, (Manhattan,) N. 'Y., this 18th day of-March, 1908.
BERNHARD LEYH.
