NAPKIIT 0R ROLL ATTACHMENT FOR RUBBER-DAM CLAMPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 1'7, 1919.
Application filed March 4. 1919; Serial No. 280.619.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known thatI, JAMES W. IVORY, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in thecity and county of Philadelphia, State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Napkin or Roll Attach ment for Rubber-Dam Clamps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an attachment for a rubber dam clamp adapted to hold a napkin or roll effectively in position and directly against the sides of a tooth on which the clamp is placed and preventing leakage of saliva thereat.
The invention is satisfactorily illustrated in the accompanying drawings, but the important instrumentalities thereof may be varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific details shown and described, as long as they are within the spirit or scope of the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a rubber dam clamp having thereon an attachment for a napkin or roll embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 represents a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 represents a perspective view similar to Fig. 1 with a roll in position thereon and as applied to teeth.
Fig. 4 represents a perspective view of another embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 5 represents a side elevation thereof.
Fig. 6 represents a top or plan view thereof.
Fig. 7 represents a perspective view similar to Fig. 4, with a roll in position thereon as applied to teeth.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures. Referring to the drawings,
1 designates a rubber dam clamp wh1ch is composed of the jaws 2 and the resilient bow 3 which carries said jaws, the same being of the type of rubber dam clamps shown in the Letters Patent No. 435,228, granted to me on the 26th day of August, 1890.
4 designates auxiliary. bows which are formed of resilient plates curved outwardly, downwardly and inwardly, and having their upper ends pivotally connected as at 5 with opposite portions of the bow 4, the inner sides of said bows providing concavities in which may be received the cotton roll 6, or a properly folded napkin either of which as is evident may be effectively held in position compressed against the sides of a tooth assisted by'the flanges and balls of the clamp, and. preventing leakage of salivathereat.
Another advantage is that when it is desirable the roll or napkin may be folded or bent around the back of the bow of the clamp and hence over the facesofthe grinding surfaces of the molars and bicuspids, asit bringsthe roll'or'nap'kin on a line with said' faces while heretofore the line of attachment would be at the necks of the teeth instead of a line with said grinding surfaces, it being evident that the auxiliary bows may be moved on their pivots forwardly or rearwardly as to produce the best results of adjustment' and compression of the auxiliary bow on the roll or napkin. r
In order to limit the extent of motions of the auxiliary bows beyond what is desirable there are formed on the pivotal ends thereof the downwardly projecting lips 9 which are adapted at proper times to abut the edges of the adjacent portions of the bow 3, the effect of which is evident.
In Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 I show another embodiment of the invention. In this instance a single auxiliary bow 10 is employed, it being connected centrally withthe how 3 by the pivot 11, so that it is adaptedto be moved as each of the individual bows 4 of the previous figures, and so have its side concave portions adjust themselves to the roll or napkin and be compressed against the latter so as to hold it in position against the teeth and over the same, assisted by the flanges 7 and balls 8 as illustrated in Fig. 7.
The bow 10 is provided at the central por tion with the lip 12 which is adapted to abut the adjacent edge of the bow 3 to limit the pivotal or swinging motions ofsaid bow 10.
In all cases the bows are resilient and sufficiently heavy enough that they will in a measure adapt themselves to hold a medium or thick cotton roll or a folded napkin, such roll being primarily in lengths of several inches, and said napkin being of strip form and of various widths, so that the napkin can be folded into a roll to be applied to the clamp.
7 While the auxiliary bows 4 provide adjustable spring arms or devices on each side of the bow 3, as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the single bow 10, in Figs. 4, 5, 6 and 7 provides an adjustable spring arm or device on each end portion of said bow 10, the operation and results being substantially the same in all of the figures.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desireto secure-by Letters Patent, is
1. A rubber dam clamp having jaws and a resilient bow carryingthe same, and auxiliary resilient clamping devices on opposite sides of said bow pivotally mounted thereon and adapted to adjustably engage-a roll or napkinr and' additionally retain it in positionon a tooth init-he manner stated.
2. A rubber dam clamp having jaws and a IBSlllBIlb bow oarrylng the same, and auxiliaryolamping devices on opposite sides of said bow mounted on-the latter adapted-to engage a roll or napkin and assist in retain- Gopjesof this patent maybe obtained for :engage a roll or napkin and five cents each, .by addressing the Washington, D. 0.
of said devices."
3. A rubber dam clamphaving jaws and a resilient bow carrying the same, and auxiliary clamping devices on opposite sides of said bow mounted on the latter adapted to assist in retaining it on a tooth in the manner stated, said devices being provided with lips extending therefrom adapted to abut said bow for lim- 30 iting the motions of saiddevices.
