J W IVORY RUBBER DAM CLAMP AND CARRIER. No.'412,622.
o e. o o m H UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES W. IVORY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
RUBBER-DAM CLAMP AND CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No, 412,622, dated October 8, 1889. Application filed October 23,1888. Serial No|283,927. (No model.)
- in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and usefullmprovernent in Rubber-Dam Carriers and Clamps, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
a My invention consists in providing a rubber-dam carrier or clamp "with means for adjusting the dam upon the tooth and securely retaining the same in position during the operation and avoiding pressure of the side portions upon the gum, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and claimed;
Figure 1 represents a perpective view of a rubber-dam carrier or clamp embodying my invention. Figs. 2 and 3 represent perspective views of opposite faces thereof, includ ing a piece of the dam, said piece being shown in position on a tooth in Fig. 3.
Similar letters and numerals of reference denote corresponding parts in the several figures.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the jaws of a rubber-dam carrier and clamp, the same being connectedby a holding-spring 1, this feature, broadly considered, being well known. On the sides of the jaws are lips 2, and on the front ends of said jaws are arms 3, it being noticed that the lips 2 project laterally or outwardly in horizontal directions, or approximately so.
The operation is as follows: An opening is made in the dam, as usual, and one of the lips inserted thereinto, said opening then being enlarged by stretching the dam so as to receive the other lip, it being seen that the dam is retained on said lips. The clamp is fitted on the tooth, as in Fig. 3, and the dam stripped from the lips 2 and slipped upon the tooth, the clamp retaining its hold on the tooth and reliably retaining the dam in position. It will be seen that the lips 2 project over the gum instead of being directed against the same, as heretofore practiced, and thus the gum, when infiamedor abnormally swollen, is kept from contact with said lips 2.
In order to apply the beaks of a pair of forceps to the clamp for separating or opening the jaws thereof and properly manipulating the same, I provide tongues 13, which are punched out of the metal from the bodies of the jaws or the lips 2 and stand at an angle to said jaws in a direct-ion upwardor downward relatively to the jaw of the tooth to which the carrier and clamp is applied. It will be seen that the tongues, being within the edges of the lips or jaws of the carrier and clamp, possess strength and are convenient of access for application of the'forceps, and occasion economy in metal of which the carrier and clamp is constructed.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The herein-described rubber-dam carrier and clamp, having connected jaws formed with lateral and horizontal lips, and tongues arranged at an angle to said lips, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The herein-described rubber-dam carrier and clamp, having the connected jaws provided with lips, and tongues punched out of said lips and arranged at an angle thereto, substantially as and for the purpose described.
JAMES W. IVORY.
