To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, Gnonen B. DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to adjustable brackets; and it contemplates the provision of an inexpensive and safe bracket, susceptible on slight manipulation to be conveniently moved and adapted when released to automatically lock and hold itself against downward movement.
With the foregoing in mind, the invention will be fully understood from the fol lowing description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a bracket constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly.
Fig. 3 is a plan of the strut, removed.
F ig. 4 is an enlarged detail vertical section showing the arrangement of the bracket body relative to the upright bar when the body is to be adjusted vertically on the bar.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the position the bracket body assumes by virtue of gravity when the same is released and the manner in which said body holds itself against downward movement.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawings.
Among other elements my novel bracket comprises an upright bar 1 spaced by blocks 2 or other suitable means from a wall or other support A and suitably lixed with respect thereto.
Adjustable vertically on the bar l is a bracket body 3. In the present and preferred embodiment of my invention the said body is formed by a metallic strap bent into loop form and having the loop 4 corresponding in shape to the cross section of the bar l and also having the parallel and slightly spaced arms 5. The loop 1 is adapted by the gravitation of the body 3 to bite against the back of the bar 1 after the manner shown in Fig. 5 and at the points indicated by 6 and 7 respectively. Consequently,
ual downward movement of the body will be precluded, and manifestly the greater the weight imposed on the body, the more strongly will it hold itself against downward movement on the bar. When, however, the body is slightly `raised-'c'. c., into the relative position shown in Fig. 4, the body may be freely moved upwardly or downwardly on the bar 1 to the position desired.
Transverse bolts 8 and 9, equipped with nuts 10 and 11 are preferably employed to connect the arms 5 together, and pivoted at 17 on the bolt 8 is a lever member 12 having a nger piece 13 at its lower end and also having an intermediate loop 14. Connected at 16 to the said loop 14 is the eye at one end of a strut 15, which strut is provided at its opposite end with an eye 18 that is interposed between the arms 5 and is pivoted on the bolt 9.
Manifestly, when the parts are relatively arranged as shown in Fig. 1, downward movement of the bracket body is precluded by the means and in the manner before described. `When, however, the finger piece 13 of the lever 12 is grasped and moved away from the face of the bar 1, the bracket body be will caused to assume the position shown in Fig. 4, relative to the upright bar 1, whereupon through the medium of the lever 12, the body 3 can be conveniently adjusted to the height desired. Then when the lever 12 is released, the body 3 will immediately assume the position shown in Fig. 5 relative to the bar 1 and strongly hold itself against downward movement.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that in addition to being safe and strong in use, my novel adjustable bracket is susceptible of being cheaply produced, and is well adapted to withstand the usage to which devices of corresponding character are ordinarily subjected.
l Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, 1s:
1. The combination in a bracket, of an upright bar, a bracket body having a loop receiving said bar and constructed and arranged when released to bite against the bar,
a lever pivoted to and depending from the bracket body, and resting adjacent to the face of the bar, and a strut interposed between said lever and the outer portion of .the bracket body.
