Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1918.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANCIS LINCOLN YOUNG and RICHARD JAMES Pnn'r'rrn, citizens of the United States, residing, respectively, at New York city, in the county of New York, and Jamaica, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk-Record-Filing Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention is a disk-record filing cabinet, the features and advantages of which will be apparent to those skilled in the art from an understanding of the following description in connection with the drawings.
In these Figure 1 is a vertical section partly in elevation on the line 1-1 in Fig. 2 on a larger scale of a record cabinet embodying one of the forms that our invention may take, Fig. 2 is a partial front view of the same cabinet, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a detail.
Describing now the specific devices of the drawings :1 is a box having an opening, through which the records are accessible, protected by the hinged door 2. 3 is a rod extending lengthwise of the box near the front and is supported above the bottom of the box by the standards 4:. 5 and 6 are rubber or equivalently covered rods sup ported by said standards below and to either side of the rod 3.
77 are a plurality of elbow shaped hangers having headed projections 8 from their elbows whereon the records are adapted to be hung or supported by their center holes in face relation to both arms of the hangers. The heads of the projections 8 prevent the records from working off the projections. Compare Figs. 1, 2 and 3, the records being designated 9.
The ends of the hanger-arms extend beyond the periphery of the'records, all the lower ends 10 being pivotally supported on the aforesaid rod 3, said ends projecting below said rod so as to be located between the rubber covered rods 5 and 6 against which they strike and by which they are stopped and supported in their inner and outer positions respectively (see Fig. 1). The purpose of the covering on the rods 5 and 6 is to deaden the noise of their contact with the hangers.
The opposite ends 11 of the hangers are formed into finger pieces bearing designating index numbers for the records, said finger pieces serving to oscillate the hangers and records into and out of the cabinet.
Each hanger may have a third arm or part 12 extending from the point of the elbow, so that each hanger has three recordcontacting or supporting arms 120 apart. Rubber facings or bands 13 or equivalent protective material areprovided on these arms to prevent them from scratching the records,
When the hangers and records are in their inner position, they are contained wholly inside the cabinet so that the door 2 (Fig. 1) can be shut. In this position, the finger pieces 11 are presented toward the opening in the cabinet with the recorddesignations thereon plainly visible as in Fig. 2. Any of the records can be with drawn by pulling its finger piece forwardly through the opening in the cabinet, in
which position the hanger is supported by the stop-rod 6. The record has thus been brought forwardedgewise out of the row, and can be lifted off the projection 8 of its hanger and by the reverse procedure can be replaced on the hanger and returned into the cabinet.
Of course changes may be made in the above which will nevertheless still be within the spirit and intent of our invention and we propose to cover any such by the annexed claims under the doctrine of equivalents.
lVhat we claim is 1. A record-cabinet for center-holed disk records, having housed within it a plurality of hangers for supporting the records vertically in side-by-side relation, each hanger provided on one side face thereof with a lateral. extension receivable through the hole in a record to support the record. on the hanger; said hangers being mounted for movement outwardly of the cabinet to carry the records into position to be grasped.
2. A record-cabinet for center-holed disk records, having housed within it a plurality of hangers for supporting the records vertically in side-by-side relation, each hanger provided on one side face thereof with a lateral extension receivable through the hole in a record to support the record on the hanger and having a terminal head to prevent acoidental displacement of the record from the extension; said hangers being mounted tfor movementwoutwardly of the cabinet to 'c'arry'the' records into i-position to be grasped.
3. A record-cabinet for center-holeddisk records, having housed Within it a plurality of hangers for sup1porting -the recordsvertically in side-by-side relation, each hanger consisting of a plurality of arms radiating from a common center and having on one of its's 'ide' faces a lateral extension-located substantially atsaid centerand receivable thronghithe hole in a record to support the record on the hanger; said hangers being fnouiited for movement outwardly of 'the cabinet to carry the records into position to be grasped.
4.- A record-cabinet for center-holed disk records, containing a plurality of movable hangers which support said records verticallyin -sid'e-by side relation, each of said hangers having a lateral extension receivable'throughthe hole in a recordto support the record on Jthehanger, and each-consisting of an 'elboi'v shaped'part pivoted at one end 'to'the cabinet and having the aforesaid record-supporting extension atthe angle of the hanger.
