To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, -PERLEY L. ORMISTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Days Creek, in the county of Douglas and State of Oregon, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Combined Pencil Sharpeners and Attachin Clips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a combined pencil sharpener and attaching clip.

The object of the inventionis to provide a novelty, combining a two-in-one device, which, while presenting a catchy ornamental appearance, is also very useful, both as a pencil sharpener and as a clip for attaching the pencil to a garment.

Another object, is to provide a device of this character which ma be readily transferred from one pencil to another, and which will be always ready for use in connection with the pencil on which it is mounted.

With the foregoing and other objects in View, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

The device constituting this invention comprises a cylinder or'thimble 1 of any suitable metal, of a size to fit an ordinary lead pencil shown at P. This thimble or cylinder 1 is preferably provided at its innor end with a reinforcing bead 1 and at its outer end is ivotally mounted thereon a cutter in the orm of a semi-conical shell 2,

with its larger end mounted on pintles 4:, and its smaller end extended forwardly and housed within an outer casing 8 as is shown clearly in Fig. 2. The shell 2 is provided with a plurality of spiral slots 3 having cutting edges which are preferably depressed slightly to a greater extent at one end than at the other, that is, the slot 3 near the wider end of the shell is depressed more Specification of Letters Patent. This arrangement of the cutters in connection with their spiral form provides for the easy sharpening of a pencil Without danger of breaking the lead. The pintles 4 project laterally from diametrically opposite sides of the upper end of the thimble 1 as is shown clearly in Fig. 4 and are provided with heads shown at l.

The casing 8 may be of any desired configuration, and is preferably made in the form of a beaver having a flat tail 10 which operates as a lever for swinging the cutter in a manner presently to be described. The nose 9 of this casing 8 is designed to house the pointed end of the cutter shell 2 and the arched shape thereof provides ample chip room over the cutters as is shown clearly in Fig. 2, the chips dropping out on opposite sides of the shell.

' A spring 5 extends around the outer end of the sleeve 1 on its lower side, as shown in Fig. 4:, and has its ends coiled on the pintles t between the cutter shell 2 andthe casing 8, the ends of said spring being housed in pockets 6 at the rear end of the casing 8, said pockets being shaped to form the hind legs of the beaver. The sleeve 1 is here shown provided with a tubular head 7 which extends around one half thereof and in which is housed a semicircular portion of the spring 5, as is shown clearly in Figs. 1, 2 and 4-.

In the use of this device as a pencil sharpener, the pointed end of the pencil is inserted in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 and the pencilrotated to cause the cutters 3 to sharpen it in the ordinary manner.

When the device is to be used as an attaching clip it is inserted as shown in Fig. 5 with the nose of the beaver shaped casing adapted to clampingly' engage the coat pocket between said nose and the pencil P as shown in Fig. 5 and thus prevent loss of the pencil, while at the same time, the easing presents an ornamental or catchy appearance.

The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to What may be considered the preferred or approved form of my invention. It is to be understood that I may make any changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, etc., as may prove expedient and fall within the scope of the claimed invention.

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described comprising a pencil encircling sleeve having a cutting element pivotally mounted on one end thereof, a casing encompassing said sharpening element, and a spring engaged with said sharpening element and said sleeve to exert its tension for holding the cutting element normally in alinement with the sleeve.

2. A device of the class described comprising a sleeve, a semi-conical cutter shell pivotally mounted at its larger end on one end of said sleeve, and a spring connecting said shell and sleeve and exerting its tension to produce a lateral movement on said shell.

3. A device of the class described comprising a sleeve, a semi-conical cutter shell pivotally mounted at its larger end on one end of said sleeve, and a spring connecting said shell and sleeve and exerting its tension to produce a lateral movement on said shell, and a casing carried by said shell and projecting beyond its smaller end and spaced above the top thereof,'said casing having a rearwardly extending lever handle whereby the casin and shell may be moved laterally relativey to the sleeve.

A device of the class described comprising a pencil encircling sleeve, a semiconical shell pivotally mounted at its larger end on'one end of said sleeve, a spring mountedto force said shell laterally relative to said sleeve,'spiral cutting slots on said shell, and a rearwardly extending lever handle carried by said shell.

5. A device of the class described comprising a pencil encircling member, a forwardly projecting cutter pivotally mounted thereon, and a shell-like casing fixed to and encircling said cutter and having a lever to allow movement of the shell on its pivot.
