l Be it known that we, ETHAN I. Donne, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, and Ronnn'r S. FER- oUsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Illuminating Devices; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description 0f the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in illuminating devices, and more particularly to lamps,-the object of the in- Avention being to so construct a lamp that it may be rendered luminous by means of artificial light supplied therein at intervals and for brief periods of'time, and so that it will retain and emit light for a considerable period' after the actuating or energizing light shall have been extinguished, whereby a mild, cold light may be provided at a4 minimum cost, sufficient in brilliance for' ordinary purposes where a mild light is desired.
A further object is t0 provide simple and elicient supporting means for illuminatingr material within a globe-and in a manner to insure the uniform activating or energizing of-said material by. a source of light contained Vwithin the supporting means.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists 1n certain novel features of constructlon as herelnafter'set forth and pointed Aout in the claims.
In'the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 provements, and Fig. 2 isa view of a modifil' representsv a globe 4havin a Han ed mouth portion 2 g g which may be received by portion 3 of a lamp fixture such as commonly employed in incandescent lamp installation. The socket of the lamp xture receives the base member 4 of an incandescent lamp bulb 5 so that the latter will be disposed within the globe 1, or rather `within a cage or carrier 6, located within the globe.

The cage or carrier 6 iswconstructed of netting (preferably wire netting) of comparatively close mesh and supports a material 7 which will absorb light so as to become luminous when exposed to a source of light. Such pliosphorescent material may comprise zinc or calcium sulfid and will prefereably also contain an infinitesimal amount of radioactive material` such as a Salt of radium. This material is supported in place in the interstices of the mesh of the 'cage and is properly distributed throughout the latter. A material 8 is located in the bottom of the cage or carrier hand this material may be of the same composition as that above described, except that it will contain a suiiciently greater proportion of radioactive material (such as a salt of radium) as will render this body or mass 8 of material permanently luminous.
The upper open end of the cage or carrier 6 enters the flanged mouth portion .2 of the globe l and may be held in piace by the iianged edge 9 of a dish or closure 5.0,-tlie latter having an opening for the accommodation of the lamp base 4 and an annular flanged portion 11 which closely embraces said lamp base. The disk l0 thus serves to hold the cage 6 in place and also to cover the cage and mouth of the globe and thus preclude the entrance of dust, moisture or other foreign matter.
Instead of making the cage or holder o1 Wire or other netting, we may employ such 4 material as mica in the construction of said a -permanent1spot lightbut it will also act to mildly excite or activate the material 6 and cause the same to glow somewhat even when it hes not been reactivated for a iong period by the temporary lighting of the incandescent lamp 5.' Hering fully described. our invention, what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is zl. .An illuminating device, comprising a' globe, e carrier supported therein, phosphorescent material carried by the upright Wall of said carrier and permanently luminousmaterial supported by the bottom of said carrier.
2. An ilulninating device, comprising a. globe, a cage inclosed by and supported therein, phosphorescent material supported by the Wall of said inclosed cage, and :1 source of light within the cage.
3. A11-illuminating device, comprising u globe, a cage constructed of meshingsupported within said globe, phosproescent manemen tei-iai supported in the 'interstices of the meshing of said cage, and a source of light Within said cage.
