TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed August 21, 1917. Serial No. 187,337.
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN Koor-r, Jr., a
- citizen of the United States, residing at Brookline, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
My invention belongs to that class of toys which may be drawn about and thus produce sounds entertaining to children.
My new and improved device consists of a cage composed of a pair of wheels 'mounted on an axle, a plurality of bars extending from various points adjacent the periphery of one of the wheels to corresponding points adjacent the periphery of the other, a ball confined within the cage formed, and means for drawing the device about. When drawn about the ball falls and bounces from bar to bar and in striking against the bars makes a noise. A further novel feature of my device resides in the visibility of the ball, which as it is rolled and bounced about holds the attention and interest of children to a much greater degree than is the case in prior devices of similar character in which the sound creating apparatus is concealed within the walls of a drum. In its preferred form my device embraces a further amusing feature in a cup-like receptacle mounted on the axle and adapted to catch the ball when the latter is thrown with sufficient force from the bars, and in which the ball rides until it is tipped out or otherwise dislodged. The combination of visible moving parts and resultant sound proves very entertaining to children, and when the additional feature is included an opportunity is provided to develop skill and rivalry in jumping the ball with just the force necessary to land it in the cup.
The device may be simply and cheaply constructed of wood and metal, wood being preferably employed for the wheels, bars and axle, and tin for the receptacle and a great variety of substances for the ball according tothe quantity and quality of sound which it is desired to produce, such for example as glass marbles, hard wood or metal balls and the like. A simple wire bail secured at its extremities to the extremities of the axle is a convenient means whereby the device may be drawn about.
Referring to the accompanying drawing in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the various figures thereof, Figure 1 is a perspective of my new and improved toy, and Fig. 2 a vertical cross section of the same. 3 and 4 represent the wheels, 5 the bars, 6 the ball,
secure by Letwheels mounted on an axle and a plurality of bars extending from one to the other of said wheels, combined with a ball loosely confined within said cage.
2. In a toy, a cage comprising a pair of wheels mounted on an axle and a plurality of bars extending from one to the otherof said wheels, combined with a ball loosely confined within said cage, a receptacle adapted to receive and retain said ball mounted on said axle, and means whereby said toy may be drawn about.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of August, 1917 JOHN KOCH, JR.
