THERESA BACKOFF, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
CLOTHES-LINE HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 13, 1918.
Application filed March 18,.1918. Serial No. 223,054.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THERESA BAOKOFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improve ments in clothes line hangers, and the object of the invention is to provide a device for hanging a clothes line which will facilitate the hanging of the clothes on the line and which can be used to raise the line after the clothes have been hung thereon, at the same time drawing it taut, thus preventing the line from unduly sagging, all in a single and simple operation.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side view showing my improved clothes line hanger and the clothes line supported thereby in a lowered position; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same in a raised position.
Referring to the drawing, 1 indicates a post, in the upper portion of which is a screw hook 2 to which is hooked a pulley block 3, around the pulley of which can travel an endless clothes line 4, said clothes line also traveling around a pulley in a pulley block 6 hooked to a hook 7 on the free end of a swinging arm 8, pivoted at its other end, as shown at 9, to an extension 10 from a sleeve 11. Said sleeve can slide vertically on a rod 12, the lower end of which is offset and rigidly secured to a vertically extending stationary object 13 such as a post or the side of a house. The upper portion of said rod extends through screw eyes 14, 16, screwed into said stationary object 13, the screw eye 14 being at the top of the rod and the screw eye 16 being at a point below the screw eye 14 a distance about equal to the length of the arm 8. A screw hook 17 is also screwed into said stationary object 13, and on said screw hook 17 is hooked a pulley block 18 around the pulley of which extends a cord or cable 19, of which one end is fastened around a bend or hump 21 in said arm 8 close to the hooked end thereof, and the other end can be fastened to a cleat 22 secured to said stationary object 13.
The following is the mode of use of the shown in Fig. 1, the person who is hanging out the clothes stands near the arm 8 and hangs the clothes on the adjacent portion of the clothes line, moving the clothes line around the pulley as the clothes are hung thereon until the whole of the clothes have been so hung or the clothes line has been filled. She then loosens the cord 19 from the cleat 22 and pulls upon said cord. The effect of the pull is to swing the free end of the arm 8 upward and at the same time to raise the sleeve 11 on the rod 12. When the upper end of the sleeve arrives at the screw eye 16 it is thereby arrested, and the effect of the continued pull upon the cord 19 is to swing the arm 8 farther upward and thereby draw the free end of the arm close to the screw eye 14 and away from the screw hook 2, thereby increasing the distance between the pulley blocks, tightening the endless cord, and greatly reducing the sagging of the cord, although a clothes line carrymg a heavy line of clothes necessarily sags to some extent.
When the arm 8 has been swung into the position shown in Fig. 2 the cord 19 is fastened to the cleat 22.
The principal advantages of my invention are the great simplicity of construction, and
economy of material, and also the fact that l the raising of the clothes line and the drawing of it taut to reduce the sagging of the clothes is effected in a single simple and easy operation.
I claim:
A clothes line hanger comprising devices for supporting different portions of the clothes line, an arm provided with means upon one end to movably support one of said devices, an upwardly extending guideway, a guide movable on said guideway and to which the other end of said arm is pivoted to swing on a horizontal axis, means for limiting the upward movement of the guide upon theguideway, a cord attached to said arm between its pivot and the device connected to the arm, and a stationary pulley above said means, the cord extending from the arm first upwardly, then around the pulley and then downwardly.
