Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1918.
Application filed J uly 20, 1917. Serial No. 181,724.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownthat I, GEORGE P. BprLER, a citizen of the United States, reslding at Lebanon, in the county of Grafton'and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Slgn-Iosts; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and er;- act description of the same, and whlch sa1d drawings constitute part of thlsapplication, and represent, in
Figure l a face view of a sign-post constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 a broken face view of the central portion of the upper edge of the lower s gnboard and the lower edge of the upper signboard.
Fig. 3 a plan view partly in section of the pair of clamping-collars employed in conneting the upper and lower sign-boards.
Fig. it anedge view of one of the collars.

of a sign-wing attached thereto.
Fig. 6 a face view of the sign-wing detached. I
Fig. 7 a sectional viewon the line 77 of Fig. 5.
Fig. 8 a sectional view on the line 88 of Fig. 5.
This invention relates to an improvement in sign posts, and particularly to sign posts made from metal and with especial reference to sign posts which consist of a lower sign board and an upper sign board arranged at angles to each other, the object of the invention being a construction which permits of the boards to be adjusted at the desired angle and firmly secured in place, and also to provide for the attachment of a lantern.
to a sign post, and also for the application thereto of so called sign-wings; and the in-- vention consists in the construction hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims. p
In carrying out my invention I employ a sign-board 9 which I will term the lower sign-board which is mounted in the upper end of a sign-post 10 being provided with a shank 11 which may be set into a socket 12 on the top of the post, and if the shank is round will be secured in the socket by a screw 13, or the shank may be made angular and. set into an angular hole in the post other and are connected together by two semi-circular clamping collars 17 and 18, these sections being formed with V-shaped grooves 19 so that the collars fit over the plates and the collars are connected together by screws 20 so as to firmly connect the upper sign-board with the lower sign board and permit the boards to be adjusted to any desired angle with respect to each other.
Preferably and as herein shown, the upper sign-board 15 will be provided with a plate 21 similar to the plate lion the lower sign-board upon which may rest the base 22 of a lantern 23, this lantern being secured to the plate 21 by collars 24 like the collars 17 and18 just described. If the upper signboard is not used a lantern may be placed upon the plate 14 upon the top of the lower sign-board. At some cross-roads it is nec-' essary to have what is called a sign wing in which case I employ a sign-wing 25 formed at its inner end with a disk 26 adapted to rest upon the top of the socket 12 on, the sign-post, the d1sk-being provided with a hole 27 for the passage through it of the shank 11. When the sign-wing is to be used an annular rib 28 from the lower end of the socket 12 will be provided with notches 29 to receive the lower corner 30 of the sign-wing plate so that the inner end of the sign-wing plate will be firmly supported by thesocket. It will thus be seen that I provide for sign-boards which may be arranged at an angle to each other according to the direction of the roads where they are placed, and also provide for additional signwings if such are necessary at any particular junction.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a sign board. provided at its upper end with a plate having a flat upper face and a beveled under face, and means for clamping a device having a flat under face to the said plate, whereby the device may be mounted a plate having a flat upper face and a beveled under face, and means for clamping a, edges with means for embracin said eclges device having a flat undel: face to the said end clamping said boerols togerilier and enplate, said means eompnslng two semi-cirgulerly adjusting same. cular collars the inner faces of which have In testimon whereof, I have signed this 5 \I-shapecl grooves, whereby said device may specification 1n the presence of two sub- 15 be mounted upon the sign board at any describing witnesses.
