CLAMP FOR JOINTER-STANDARDS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ARTHUR D. BAKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for J ointer-Standards, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates generally to an improvement in connecting means for jointer standards, and particularly to a clamp in the use of which the jointer standard may be quickly and positively secured to the plow beam, the construction of the clamp providing for desirable and necessary adjustments of the jointer standard.
The improved clamp is constructed essentially of two parts, between which the jointer standard is secured, the clamp members being disposed wholly on one side of the plow beam, and so connected with each other, and with the plow beam, as to provide for independent adjustment of the clamp members to secure a rotative adjustment of the standard to permit lateral adjustment of the jointer foot, or an adjustment of the clamp as a whole to respond to the beam to vary the cutting angle of the jointer foot.
The invention in its preferred form of details will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating the application of the improved clamp. Fig. 2 is a broken elevation of the same taken from the opposite side. Fig. 3 is a top plan of the construction as shown in Fig. 2. Fig. t is an end view'of the clamp, the beam adjacent the clamp being shown in section. .Figs. 5 and 6 are perspective views showing the respective clamp members. Fig. 7 is an enlarged plan illustration of the application of the clamp.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, the improved clamp, as is usual, is designed for application to they beam 1 of a plow and designed to secure a jointer standard 2, carrying the usual j ointer foot 3, the standard being formed with the usual longitudinally extending channel or groove at.

and the other to overlie the jointer standard and hereinafter termed the free member, 6. The main member comprises a plate preferably of the outline shown, that is of uniform height for a portion of its length, beyond which it is gradually reduced as at 7. In the rear portion and outer face of the main member, the latter is formed with a channel 8, extending from top to bottom of the plate, and preferably of a circumferential extent greater than a semi-circle. The edge walls of the channel 8 present at their extreme upper and lower ends projections 9 and 10, respectively, the walls intermediate these projections being cut away or reduced.
Beyond the channel 8 toward the rear end of the main member, and preferably at the lower end of the channel is a bolt opening 11, a corresponding opening 12 being formed in the reduced portion 7 beyond and in advance of the upper end of the channel. The bolt openings 11 and 12 are thus arranged diagonally of the channel as shown. The
upper portion of the main member is of somewhat greater thickness, than the remainder of said member, presenting a ledge 13 on the inner or beam engaging side of the member, said ledge extending throughout the full length of the member, and being laterally enlarged at the forward end of the member, as at 14, to present a bear-.
ing plate which fully overlies the beam, said plate being formed with a threaded opening 15 to receive an adjusting screw 16, the function of which will later appear. The free member 6 of the clamp comprises an approximately rectangular plate section, formed with a channel 17 extending vertically thereof and corresponding in radius to the channel 8 of the main member, the circumferential extent of the channel 17 completing a full circular bearing portion with the channel 8. Extending longitudinally of the wall of the channel 17 is a rib 18. This rib is of a size to cooperate with the groove 4 of the jointer standard, but said rib is disposed at one side of the longitudinal median line of the channel 17. This disposition of the rib is important for a purpose which will later appear. The edge walls of the channel 17 are formed or provided with notches 19 to receive the projections 9 and 10 of the main. member. These notches 19, being so located and shaped as to loosely receive the projections to permit independent lot movement of the parts without permitting their complete separation vertically. In other words the free member, so far as the interfit of the notches andproj ections is concerned is free for a limited play with respect to the main member. The free member 6 is formed with bolt receiving openings 20 designed to cooperate with the bolt receiving openings 11 and 12 of the main member. The disposition of the bolt openings 11, 12 and 20, being such that the free member bolt openings will register with the bolt openings of the main member Whether the free member is in one position or in an end for end reversal position.
The clamp is secured in place by bolts 21 which pass through the registering openings of the members, and, respectively, above and below the beam, in fact, providing some little space between the upper and lower edges of the beam and the bolts. The clamp as a whole is arranged on one side of the beam, and the free ends of the bolts on the opposite side of the beam are engaged by a tie-plate 22, to bear against said beam and held by nuts28 secured upon the bolts.
In applied position as more particularly shown in Fig. 7 it will be noted that the standard 2 is held in the channels 8 and 17, of the respective clamp members with the rib 18 of the free member fitting in the groove 4 of the standard. The bolts 21 secure the locked parts inthis position, the application of the clamp to the standard positioning the adjusting screw 16 so that its lower end bears upon the upper edge of the standard. If for example, it is desired to adjust the clamp to vary the angle of the jointer foot, this may be readily accomplished as a whole by proper manipulation of the set screw 16, the operation of the latter causing the clamp to be in effect tilted with relation to the plow beam and the corresponding adjustment of the jointer foot obtained. If a lateral adjustment of the jointer foot is desired, necessitating a 1'0- tative movement of the jointer standard, such can be readily accomplished by proper tightening or loosening of the respective bolts 21, such operation swinging the free member of the clamp with respect to the main member, and by the cooperation of the free member with the standard through the tongue and groove connection, correspond- 'ingly adjusting the standard. If, however,

an extensive adjustment of this character is required, or the groove of the jointer standard be not accurate with respect to the position of the foot, the free member of the clamp may be turned so as to position the rib 18 thereof forward of the longitudinal median line of the channel 17, or in rear thereof, as the case may be, and thus oompensate to a considerable extent for any slight inaccuracy in the location or centering of the groove due to carelessness in forming the a groove in the manufacture thereof.
The improved clamp, it is obvious, may be readily applied to or removed from the beam, and when positioned provides for the adjustment of the jointer foot to vary the angle thereof, or for the rotative adjustment of the standard to vary the lateral position of the foot, the clamp providing for such rotative adjustment in either or both of two distinct ways.
The improved clamp is of course to be constructed in accordance with the character of the beam with which it is to cooperate and obviously of a metallic character suflicient to warrant the strain to which it may be subjected.
WVhat is claimed. is
1. A jointer standard clamp including a main member formed with a jointer stand ard channel, a free member formedwith a jointer standard channel and a rib extending longitudinally of said channel and offset from the longitudinal median line thereof, the free member being reversible with respect to the main member.
A jointer standard clamp including a main member formed with a jointer standard channel, a free member formed with a jointer standard channel and a rib extending longitudinally of said channel and offset from the longitudinal median line thereof, the free member being reversible with respect to the main member, and means extending above and below the plow beam for connecting said members together and to the plow beam.
