GUIDE FOR MOLDIhlG-FLASKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented An. 11, 19141.
Application filed January 30, 1914. Serial No. 815,492.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM PARTRmcn, residing at Salem, in the county of Golumbiana and State of Ohio, a citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for h lol'ding-Flasks, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide for molding flasks, a guide or interlocking device which is of rigid construction and may be manufactured cheaply, and wherein the groove 01', slot for the guide pin may be adjusted both laterally and obliquely with relation to the face of the fias: member to which it may be secured.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, which form part of my specification, 1 have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Figure 1 is a face view of portions of flask parts with the interlocking device attached to them; Figs. 2, 3 and a are sectional views taken on the lines IIII, IIIHI, and 1VIV, Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a face view of one part of the device.
In the several figures like numerals are used to designate like parts.
The general construction and use of molding flasks is well understood by those having knowledge of foundry practice. In the drawings but small portions of the essential parts of the flask are shown, namely, the drag 1 and cope 2; and to these members my improved guide or interlocking device is shown assembled in its operative position.
The interlocking device comprises three parts, a pin 3 secured to one of the flask members, and a plate a and guide section 5 secured to the other member, and forming between them a hole adapted to receive the pin. As illustrated in the drawings, and as is usual in devices of this character, the pin is borne by the drag 1, and the hole-forming members by the cope 2. The pin 3, which is preferably triangular in cross-section, is provided integrally with a flange 6, and with an engaging lug 7 the flange being suitably provided with holes to receive screws 8 for attaching the pin to the drag. The plate 4; extends upwardly from the meeting edges of drag and cope. It is suitably attached to the cope by means of screws 9, and has a lug 10 at each side, upon which the end of an adjusting set screw bears, as will be presently described. The plate 1 is also provided with threaded holes lladapted to re ceive screws 12 for the attachment of the guide section 5.
Heretofore in devices of this character, means have been provided for adjusting the pin-receiving hole laterally with respect to the face of the flask to which it is secured. It has been found, however, that such single adjustment is not adequate to compensate for all the distortions to which the flask members and guide pin are subjected in practice. In my improved interlocking device I provide a second adjustment whereby the pin hole may be adjusted obliquely, that is at an angle as well as laterally with relation to the face or general plane of the flask. To such an end, in this embodiment of my invention, the guide section 5 is provided with a grooved portion 13, and is attached to the plate 4 by means of the screws 12 which extend loosely through holes in the guide section, such holes being disposed on opposite sides of the groove 13; and, intermediate of the screw holes on each side of the groove, 1 provide a set screw 14 which has threaded engagement with the guide section 5 and bears upon a lug 10 of the plate 4:. The set screws form adjustable spacing members between the plate a and the guide section 5, and as such determine the lateral spacing of such section from the face of the plate a. By varying the extent to which the,
screws 12, on opposite sides of the set screws 14, are inserted in the plate 4, the inclination of the groove 13 may be adjusted within permissible limits.
It will be understood by those skilled in the art, that various other adjusting means may be employed in devices of the character contemplated by my invention without departing from the spirit thereof as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a molding flask, the combination with a drag and cope, of an interlocking device comprising a guide pin secured to one of said members, a plate secured to the other member, a guide section secured to said plate and having a groove adapted to receive said pin, and means for adjusting said section laterally and obliquely with relation to the general plane of said plate, whereby said groove may be fixed at a variable distance from said plate and at various angles with relation to the general plane thereof.
2. In a molding flask, the combination with a drag and cope, of an interlocking device comprising a guide pin secured to one of said members, a platesecured to the other member, a guide sectionhaving a groove adapted to" receive said pin, securing members extending loosely through said section and engaging said plate, and an adjustable spacing member between said plate and section'and intermediate of said securing members, whereby said section may be adjusted lalterally and obliquely with relation to said p ate. 7
- 3. In a molding flask, the combination with a drag and cope, of an interlocking device coniprisinga guide pin secured to Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner ofratents,
one of said members, a plate secured to the other member, a gulde section having a groove adapted to receive sa1d pm, screws extending loosely through holes in said section on opposite sides of said groove and engaging threaded holes in said, plate, and a set screw having threaded engagement with said section intermediate of said screws and hearing at its end upon said plate.
In testimony whereof myhand, is a V 1 WILLIAM PARTRIDGE. Witnesses: v f
