SOLDIEBS PROTECTOR.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PaNmmoY lVAsYLo- WIcH, a subject. of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldiers Protectors, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of the invention is the provision of a protector adapted to be either worn by a soldier or moved from place to place by the soldier ready for immediate use when required. provisions being made for stopping and cushioning the bullets ofthe enemy as well as holding the same in a harmless position. i

A further object of the device is to provide a protector that renders the bullets of the enemy entirely harmless to the soldier in charge of the device although the soldier may readily fire upon the enemy without exposing himself or being seen from the enemys lines, the device presenting an appearance calculated to deceive the enemy into believing that the same is something else than a bullet shield.

My invention is in the nature of a bulletproof guard or barrier and may be constructed of any desired size being herein illustrated for carrying by the soldier as well as for wheeling about as desired.

inwardly of the covering 12. A plurality of springs 17 are interposed between the plate 10 and a metallic screen or mesh member 18 upon the inner face of the inner cotton layer 16.

Strengthening ribs 19 are positioned upon the rear face of the plate ltltwhile the marginal rim or flange 20 extends entirely around the plate. 'A brush-work of wooden bristles 21 1s carried by the leather covering 11 and these bristles being thickly positioned upon said outer covering form ready means for stopping bullets as well as resisting any bayonet attacks. The outer leather covering 11 is secured to the flange 20 by means of a metallic binding strip 22. The. plate 10 is provided with a notch or slot 23 in one side thereof adapted to accommodate a rifle for positioning therethrough in firing upon the enemy. The outer covering 11 is carried around the edges of this slot 23 by means of a supplemental piece or strip 24 and the bristles 21 being omitted from the strip 24, permits such a rifle such as indicated at 25 by dotted lines in Fig. '1 to be readily thrust through .the device by the soldier such as 26 positioned therebehind. \Vheels 27 are preferably mounted at a point adjacent one end of the plate 10 by means ofan axle 28 journaled in bearings 29 upon the said plate with recesses 30 formed in the plate to receive the wheels. Curved handles 31 are provided adjacent the opposite. end of the plate 10 for employent in pushing or pulling the device over the ground such as when de sired to transfer the same from one place to another. The end 33 of the device which is adjacent the wheels-27 is squared or fiat for seating upon the ground with the plate 10 supported thereby and by the wheels 27 in its upright operative position. The opposite or upper end 34 of the device is curved and the appearance of the structure forwardly thereof as viewed by the while 'the' bullets of the enemy will be stopped by the bristles 21 and the springs 13 1 and 17 cushioning the impact of the bullets upon the plate 10.
