Description

A. PONIATOWSKI.
SOLDIERS SHIELD.
APPLICATION FILED MAR 11. 1918.
Patented May 28,1918.
FIG.2..
30 i i to corresponding parts throughout the sev- TED STATES ATENT OFFICQ ALEXANDER PONIATOWSKI, FEB/TH AMBOY, NEW JERSEY.
SOLDIERS SHIELD.
To aZZ 'w Zwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER PONIA- rowsnna citizen of Russia, residing at Perth Amboy, in the county of Middlesex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soldiers Shields, of which the following is a specification.
Theprimary object of the invention is the prov1s1on of a shield for soldiers in the nature of a portable barrier for protecting soldiers from the bullets of theenemy when engaged in battle, the device being readily transported when desired and possessing great strength and stability when set up for use.
A further object of the device is to pro- 1 vide a bullet shield serviceable as a cart or ambulance when not in use as a shield, the device being suitably retained in either of its adjusted positions as a enter a barrier.
A still further object of the device is the provision of a wheeled bullet shield permitting soldiers to fire upon the enemy when rotected by the shield and providing a orm of firing booth for accommodating the soldiers during an engagement with the enemy.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like numeralsrefer eral views:
Figure 1 1s a vertical sectlonal view of the device taken upon line 1-1 of Fig. 2, the
. plate substantially rectangular in form having a curved portion 11 at one longi- 50..
tudinal edge thereof. the said plate being formed of bullet-proof material adapted as a shield for soldiers positioned behind the same with the curved portion 11 disposed at the top of the device and extending rearwardly for service in deflecting oncommg bullets.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 28, 1918.
Application filed March 11,1918. Serial No. 221,701.
Substantially 1 A-shaped brackets 12 are secured to the rear side of the plate 10 having bearings 13 at their rear converging ends with a shaft 14 journaled in the said bearings 13 and having ground wheels 15 journaled upon the shaft 14 adjacent its opposite ends and outwardly of the brackets 12.
Arms 16 are secured to the shaft 14 providedwith heads 17 upon their free ends normally positioned upon the ground such as 18 when the device is set up for use as a barrier with the plate 10 vertically disposed. A spring-pressed bolt 19 is earned by the cross-piece 20 of eachof the brackets 12 for seating within sockets 21 in the adjacent side of the shaft 14 when the plate 10 is disposed vertically as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, said bolts 19 being also adapted for seating within similar sockets 22 in the shaft 14, when the plate 10 is horizontally positioned for use as a cart as illustrated in Fig. 3.
Port-holes 23 are provided in the plate 10 through which the soldiers located behind the barrier may readily shoot at the enemy. A counter or platform 24 is provided on the rear side of the said plate providing trays 25 for holding ammunition for the accommodation of the soldiers. It will be understood that when the plate 10 is horizontally disposed and locked in position by means of the bolt 19, the arms 16 may be grasped by the soldier and the device readily pushed or drawn along to the desired position for setting up as a bullet-protecting shield while articles for soldiers may at such times be positioned upon the horizontally arranged plate 10 for purposes of transportation if desired. When the plate 10 is vertically disposed and the bolts 19 are locked within the recesses 21, the device will present a rigid arrangement as the bottom of the plate 10 rests upon the ground 18 as does also the wheels 15 and the heads 17 of the arms 16, which arms are rigid with the said shaft 14.
A serviceable arrangement for soldiers is provided adapted for preventing loss of life as well as a portable barrier or wall 1. A shield comprising a plate having port-holes therethrough, a wheeled shaft, rackets upon said plate j ournaled upon said shaft, locking connections between; the said brackets and shaft operable With theplate I contacting the, ground.
