SCRUBBING-BRUSH. I I
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JOSEPH CHECK, a citizenof the United States, residing at -Wilkes- Barre, in the county of Luzerne, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Scrubbing-Brush; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and
exact description of the inventiorn such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsto make and use the same.
The present invention relates to a handle for scrubbing brushes, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the scrubbing brush can bemanipulated by a person in a standing position, thereby avoiding the back breaking labor which is incident to stooping over or getting down upon the knees.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which can be applied as an attachment to an ordinary scrubbing brush, which can be set at different angles to suit the requirements of different kinds of work, and which admits of the foot being utilized to press downwardly upon the brush when a heavy pressure becomes desirable for the cleaning of some particular spot.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claims.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following de scription and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a scrubbing brush provided with a handle constructed in accordance with the invention, portions being broken away and shownin section to illustrate more clearly the details of construction.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same with portions broken away.
Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the combined brace and foot rest, looking in the direction of the standard, a portion of the standard being broken away and shown in section.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indi- Specification of Letters Patent.

cated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, the reference character A designates a conventional scrubbin brush which is provided with the usual bac -1. A clamping head 2 is applied to the back of the scrubbing brush and rigidly secured in position thereon. In the present instance this clamping head is shown as having a channel shaped formation to receive the back of the brush, one of the side flanges of the clamping head being provided with a screw 3 for engagement with the brush back to lock the parts securely in position. A short standard 4 extends vertically upward from the middle of the clamping head 2 at one side thereof, the opposite side of the clamping head being provided .With a pivot lug 5 to which the lower end of a long handle 6 is connected by a pivot in 7. This handle 6 extends upwardly so as to be grasped by an operator when in a standing position, and is adapted to be set at different angles to suit the convenience of the op erator or to enable the brush to be used in a most effective manner upon different kinds of work. A horizontally disposed foot rest and brace 8 connects the upper end of the standard 4 to the handle 6 and serves to hold the handle rigidly in an adjusted position. This foot rest and brace member 8 referably has a channel shaped cross section, as indicated by Fig. 3, one end thereof being bifurcated at 9 and pivotally connected at 10 to the handle 6, while the opposite end thereof is formed with an elongated opening 11 to receive the standard. The side flanges of the brace member are provided with slots 12 corresponding to the opening 11 and receiving a clamping bolt 13 which extends through the standard. A nut 14: is fitted upon the clamping bolt 13, and cooperates therewith to lock the parts in an adjusted position. When the nut is loosened the brace member 8 can be moved for the purpose of adjusting the angular position of the handle 6, although when the nut is tightened the parts are held securely against relative movement. This member 8 also provides a foot rest. When it is desired to use a heavy pressure upon the brush for the purpose of cleaning some particular spot, the operator can place one of his feet upon the bar 8 and press downwardly thereon as the brush is moved back and forth by the handle 6. The
brush can thus be efi'ectivelyused for cleaning floors and other similar surfaces wjthout the necessity of the usual back breaking stooping and bending over;
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1 The combinatimr brush, of a clamping head applied to the back of the brush, a short rigid standard projecting upwardly from one side of the head, a long handle extending upwardly fromthe opposite side of the head-and-pi'votally'connected thereto at its lower; end; a
sl'lbstantially horizontally disposed footrest and brace pivotally connected to the handle and slidably engaging the standard; and means for clamping the foot rest and brace to the standard to hold the handle in an adr justed position.'
2. The combination 'Wltll a scrubbing-- brush, of a clamping head appliedto the,

with a scrubbing in}; from one side 'of thhead'; a long handle extending upwardly from the opposite side of the head and pivotally connected thereto, a substantially horizontally disposed foot rest and brace connecting the standard to the handle, said foot rest and brace having achannel shaped cross section andone end thereof being bifurcated and pivotall'y' con neoted to the handle; while the opposite end thereof is provided with an elongated opening receiving the standards the 'isi'deflanges '2 having slots corresponding? to the said elongated opening-,1 and a clamping bolt extend ingl through the standardand slots of thefoot rest'and' brace for securing thelatteriir an adjusted' 'position. 9 I In testimony: whereof I- have signed my)v name to thisspecifioation in the? presence of twosubscribing,-witnesses;-
