TOOL-HANDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,772, dated May 7, 1901.
Application filed August 13, 1900. Serial No. 26,669. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Beit known that I, J oHN ARMITAGE HALL, residing at Aspen, in the county of Pitkin and State of Colorado, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Tool -Handles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement in toolhandles designed for use with hammer, aX, pick, and other forms of heads requiring handles; and the invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view, partly in section, of an aX-head provided with a handle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 illustrates the sections of the handle in detail and detached. Fig. 3 isadetail perspective view of a hammer-head for use in my invention, and Fig. Al is a longitudinal section on about line et 4. of Fig. l.
In carrying out my invention I provide the tool-head, which may be of either of the forms shown in Figs. l and 3 or of any other suitable forxn, with a tang A, which projects from its under side and tapers gradually toward its extremity A, in which it is provided with a threaded socket B, in which turns the tie rod or bolt presently described. The tang A is fitted in a socket C, formed in the upper end of the connecting-section D. This socket O conforms to the shape of the tang A and communicates, through a reduced opening E, with the upper end of an upwardly-tapering socket F, which is formed in the lower end of the body of the con necting section D. From the lower end of such body of the connecting-section, at the opposite sides thereof, are extended the reinforcing lap-Wings or lugs G, which lie in operation on the opposite sides of the handle H and brace the same and the connecting-section firmly together.
The handle H is bored longitudinally for the passage of the tie rod or bolt, is provided at its upper end with a tang I to fit in the socket F of the connecting-section, and is adapted immediately below such tang to fit between the lap-wings G, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2.
Vhen the parts are applied as before described and as shown in Fig. l, the tie rod or bolt J is passed through the handle, thence through the opening E in the connecting-section, and is threaded at its upper end into the threaded socket in the lower end of the tang A of the head. When this tie rod or bolt is tightened, it is manifest the several parts of the device will be held-firmly together and the head will be locked in place. At the same time the rod or bolt can be unscrewed to permit the ready removal of the tool-head to enable the substitution of another form of head or for any other purpose desired.
It may be desirable in some instances to form the connecting-section or the handle proper, or both, in sets of different lengths, so the handle of any desired length may be readily applied and adjusted to secure the tool-head.
It may be desirable in some instances to further brace the handle by applying screws or other fastening devices through the lapwings G into the handle, as indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 4; but ordinarily this will not be necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination substantially as described of the head having a tang provided with a threaded socket, the connecting-section socketed at its upper end to receive the tang of the head and at its lower end to receive the tang on the end of the handle-bar and provided with lap-wings extended beyond the said lower socket, the handle-bar fitted between said lap-wings and provided at its upper end with a tangvfitting in the lower. socket of thel connecting-section, and the tie-rod passed through the handle-bar and connecting-section and connected with the tang of the head substantially as set forth.
2. The combination of the head having a tang provided with a threaded socket, the connecting-section provided at its upperend with a socket for the tang of the head and in its lower end with a socket for the handle-bar, the handle-bar fitted at its upper end in the lower socket of the connecting-section and bored longitudinally for the passage of the connecting-bolt, and the bolt passed upwardly through the handle-bar and connecting-section and threaded atits upper end in the tang of the head substantially as set forth.
