Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 24, 1911.
Patented Nov. 14, 1911.
Serial No. 616,635.
7 b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORG BRENDEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Alle gheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Picks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to picks and the objects of my invention are, first, to provide a pick with foldable points that can be folded whereby the pick will occupy a comparatively small space in a tool box or chest; second, to provide a pick wit-h detachable points that can be removed, renewed or various kinds of pick points used, and third, to provide a pick handle with a novel pick head that will facilitate the work of the user of the pick.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the pick. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of a portion of the pick, and Figs. 4 and 5 are detailed views of pick points or heads that can be used in connection with the pick.
A pick in accordance with this invention comprises a handle 1 having one end thereof enlarged, as at 2 and mounted upon the enlarged end is a rectangular head 3 having the ends thereof bifurcated to provide oppositely disposed arms 1 and these arms are apertured, as at 5. The handle at its enlarged end is formed with a recess 1 in which is mounted a nut 12*. The head 3 has openings 6 to receive tongues or tenons 7 of the enlarged end 2 of the handle 1. The head 3 is provided with depending straps 8 adapted to engage the sides of the enlarged end 2 of the handle 1, said straps being secured to the enlarged end 2 by set screws 9 and a tie rod 10 provided with a nut 11. Adjustably mounted centrally of the head 3 is a set screw 12 having a rectangular head 13 and adapted to embrace said screw are the abutting grooved ends 14 of pick points 15, said points having offset portions 16 that are apertured, as at 17 whereby the offset portions can be pivotally mounted between the arms 4 by screws or other fastening means 18. The screw 12 engages with the nut 12", the latter abutting against the ends 14 of the pick points, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The grooved ends of the points 15 are adapted to be held in engagement with the head 3 by the head 13 of the screw 12, and any blow delivered by one of the points 15 is supported by the screws 12 and 18.
In Figs. 4 and 5 of the drawing there are illustrated two different forms of pick points, the point designated 19 conforms to .a hatchet and the point designated 20 conforms to a hammer, but it is to be understood that a set of various kinds of points can be provided with each pick head.
It is thought that the operation and utility of my invention will be apparent without further description and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is 1. A pick comprising a handle, a head mounted upon the end of said handle and having the ends thereof bifurcated to pro vide arms, pick points having oflset portions pivotally mounted between the arms of said head and further having the inner ends thereof abutting, and means carried by said head and'adapted to hold'the abutting ends of said pick points.
2. A pick comprising a handle, a head, straps connecting said head to the end of said handle, apertured arms carried by the ends of said head, pick points having apertured offset portions pivotally mounted between said arms and further having the inner ends thereof abutting, and means carried by said head and adapted to hold the abutting ends of said pick points.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GEORG BRENDEL.
