OPERATING ATTACHMENT FOR SCREW-DRIVERS, &c.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PARLEY S. PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ephraim, in the county of Sanpete and State of Utah, have invented a new and Improved Operating Attachment for Screw- Drivers and the Like, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvements in operating attachments for rotatable tools, such as, for instance, screw-drivers, bits, reamers, drills, or the like, but is especially adapted for screwdrivers, as it may be employed for turning the screwdriver in either direction.
The device is adapted for attachment to the tool in addition to the regular operating handle, which latter serves merely to apply longitudinal pressure to the tool while it is being rotated by my improved attachment.
Various devices have been designed to opcrate on somewhat the same general principle as my improved device, but my improvement consists in certain details of the construction of the ratchet, dogs, and supporting members, whereby the cost of manufacture is reduced, the efficiency increased, and the liability of accidental derangement rendered negligible.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through an attachment constructed in accordance with my invention and showing the same applied to a screw-driver, said section being taken on the line l-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
In the specific form illustrated in the accompanying drawings, I employ a collar 10, adapted to encircle the screw-driver or other tool, and to this collar is hinged an operating handle 11. The collar in itself is rotatable in respect to the tool, but within the collar there is rotatably mounted a sleeve 12, having an axial passage therethrough, a portion of which may be square in cross section to receive a square portion A of a screwdriver B. The sleeve 12 is thus non-rotatable in respect to the tool, but may freely rotate within the collar 10. The sleeve carries a ratchet wheel 13 secured thereto in any suitable manner, as, for instance, by a pin 14, and this ratchet wheel serves to prevent longitudinal movement of the sleeve in respect to the collar. The handle 11, as previously stated, is pivoted to the collar, the pivot pin 15 extending transversely of the tool, so that the handle may be swung upwardly to a position substantially parallel to the tool, or may extend outwardly therefrom at substantially right angles. Adjacent the pivot the handle presents a shoulder 16 for limiting the downward movement of the handle but permitting its free upward movement about the pivot 15 as a center. On the under side of the handle, a casing 17 is provided, the lower portion of which is disposed substantially parallel to the under side of the handle 11.
Intermediate the casing and the lower side of the handle, are provided two dogs 18 and 19, both adapted at their inner ends to e11- gage with the ratchet wheel 13. These two dogs are each movable in the plane of the ratchet wheel and are mounted upon eorresponding pivots 20. The pivots are disposed intermediate the ends of the dogs, and the adjacent outer ends of the two are norn'ially pressed apart by a coil spring 21. This tends to keep the inner ends of both dogs in direct engagement with the ratchet wheel. Intermediate the two dogs is a pin or bolt 22, having a cam projection 23 upon one side thereof. The upper end of the pin carries a short handle or lever 24, by means of which the pin may be rotated in either direction. With the handle 24: extending lengthwise of the main operating handle 11, the cam is disposed between the two dogs, as indicated in Fig. 3, and the operating handle when swung laterally in either direction, will rotate the two. By rotating the pin and its cam through approximately ninety degrees in either direction, either of the dogs may be held out of engagement with the ratchet wheel and within a pocket or recess 25 formed at one side of the collar 10. lVith either dog locked in inoperative position, the handle may be employed for rotating the tool in one direction only, the direction being dependent upon which of the dogs is in operative engagement with the ratchet wheel.
The handle 11 when in operative position extends out at substantially right angles to the tool, and at its outer end vmay be provided with any suitable form of knob or grip 2G, to facilitate the movement of said handle. The tool carries at its upper end any ordinary form of handle, grip or brace, for normally rotating the same, but in employing my improved attachment, said handle, grip or brace is used solely for the purpose of pressing down upon the tool longitudinally and holding it in engagement with the work.
For light work, when it is not desired to employ my improved attachment, the handle 11 may be moved on the pivot 15, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1, until said handle is brought to a position substantially parallel to the tool. Adjacent the pivot I preferably employ a small spring 27, which frictionally engages with the portion of the handle adjacent the pivot and serves to bind the handle in its raised position. T his upward movement of the handle 11 serves not only to bring it adjacent the tool and substantially out of the way, but also moves both of the dogs out of contact with the ratchet wheel 13, so that the latter may be freely rotated in either direction independently of the attachment.
My improved device when used in connection with an ordinary screw-driver having a round knob for a handle, possesses all of the advantages of a brace, together with the added advantage of movement to inoperative position to permit the screw-driver to be used in the ordinary manner, independently of the attachment.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A tool-operating attachment including a sleeve for encircling the tool, a ratchet wheel secured to said sleeve, a collar encircling said sleeve and held from longitudinal movement in respect thereto by means of said ratchet wheel, a handle pivoted to said collar and movable in a plane including the tool, said handle having a shoulder limiting its movement in one direction past a position at right angles to the tool, two dogs pivoted to the under side of the handle and engaging with the ratchet wheel when the handle is in one limiting position, and means intermediate said dogs for engagement with either to move it into inoperative position independently of the movement of the handle.
2. A tool-operating attachment including a sleeve encircling the tool, a ratchet wheel carried thereby and non-rotatable in respect thereto, a collar encircling said sleeve and held against longitudinal movement by said ratchet wheel, an arm pivoted to said collar and movable in a plane with the tool, dogs carried by the handle on the under surface thereof for engagement with the ratchet wheel when the handle is in one of its limiting positions, a casing carried by said handle for protecting and partially inelosing said dogs, means for moving either of said dogs into inoperative position independently of the movement of the handle, and flanges car ried by said collar and forming recesses or pockets for said dogs when the latter are in inoperative position.
