JOHN E. CADIGAN, on vnw voran, N. Y1.

To all whom it may concern: Y Y Y Be it known that I, J OHN E. OADIGAN, a citizen ofthe'United States of America, residing at New York city, in the county of NewYork and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Safety Attachments for Gas Stoves, which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a safety attachment for gas stoves and has particular reference to a protecting guard which secures the valve in one of a number of its adjusted positions.
The main object sought to be accomplished by this invention is the provision o a device which retains the valves in a predetermined position and renders the accidental opening or closing of the same impossible.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a safety attachment which will minimize the danger of children tampering with the valves as the attachment offers a substantial barrier to the manipulation of the same as well as renders them fool-proof. A further object of the invention is the provision of a safety attachment of this class which is provided with an'adjustable locking means for the handles of the valves whereby the attachment may be readily applied to any make of stove regardless of the distance between the valves.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of the class described which is of simple construction, inexpensive to manufacture and thoroughly reliable and eflicient for the purpose for which it is intended.
With these and other objects in View, the invention liesin the novel arrangement and combination of parts which are fully described in the following description particularly pointed out in the appended claims and shown in which- Figure 1 is a fragmentary a portion of a gas range. a
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line 8-3 of Fig.2, and i i Fig. 4 is'a sectional view on the line 4-4: of Fig. 1.
Referring to of reference, A a gas range which has leading therefrom to the burners the usual distributing pipes B,
the annexed draw ngs, of
plan view of Specif cation of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 5, 1917.
o 1 '13, for the clamping of the drawings by characters, designates the feed pipe of Patented July 9, 1918.
Serial No. 189,840. g
in which are arrangedthe valves C. My attachment comprises a substantially curved plate 10, which is adapted to be clamped to the feedpipe' A, by means of the split rings 11, which are here shown as formedfrom a portion of the plate 10. The rings 11, are provided with the ears 12, which receive a the plate 10, to the feed pipe. The longitudinal edges of the plate are bent upon themselves to form guide channels 14, which are adapted to receive the members 15, which are mounted for longitudinal sliding movement therein. The members 15, are provided with the upstanding lugs 16,'between which are pivoted the arms 17 the latter being provided with a series of notches 18, which are adapted to engage the handles of the valves C. The retaining springs 19, are provided on the members 15, for engagement with the arms 17, in order to hold the arms in their adjusted positions. The notches 18, have communicating portions 20, which are intended for use on valve keys of the flat type. The members 15, being slidable on the plate 10, allow for variation in the distancebetween the valves whereby the device may be attached to any make of gas range.
In operation of the device the arm 17 has one of its notches normally engaged with the valve key whereby the same is held against casual or accidental movement. \Vhen the person desires to open or close the valve, the arm 17 is swung upwardly on its pivot and the key turned to the desired po sition. The arm is then swung downwardly and one of the notches is again engaged over the valve key to hold the same in its adjusted position. Any number of notches may be employed and it will be readily un derstood that a standard flow of gas will always be had by adjusting the valve key to a predetermined notch in the arm 17, which will greatly aid the user of the stove in securing similar adjustments of the flow.
WVhile I have shown and described a simple andpreferred form of accomplishing the purpose in view, I desire to have it understood that such alterations and changes that fall within the scope of the appended claims may be resorted to when desired.
' What I claim is: I
1. A valve guard for gas stoves comprising a plate adapted to be secured to the feed pipe of the valve, a member slidable on said plate, an arm movably supported from said member and provided with a series of notches for interchangeably receiving the" handle of the Valve when said handle is in said arm in arelatively dbiiiesof this patent may be obtainedfor eacil, Washington, D. 0.
against movement, and
the handle of the valve, and means on saidmember for holding the arm in a relatively fixed position.
3." attachment for gas stoves compris ing a memberadapted'to be positioned adacent to the valve, and a swinging arm on saidmember, said arm having a longitudinal series of notches arranged therein and opening onto one eolge of the arm and adapted to interchangeably receive the handle of the movement. V I a In testimony whereof I: aflix my signature.
