Be it known that I, Fnrnnnrck Krrznnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Gas- Cocks, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to a novel means ot preventing` the accidental reopening of the gas-cock after closing the same to shut oft' the gas-supply and extinguish the light, in order to avoid Waste of gas and the injurious effects of such escaping gas upon the occupants of the apartment which would result from such inadvertance.
Theinvention consists in the particular' con-A struction for such an attachment as herein shown and described.
In the annexed drawings, Figure l is an elevation of my attachment applied to the plug of a gas-cock, with the remainder of the fixture indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a plan of the attachment and the plug, and Fig. 3 is an end view ot' the clamping-ring and the block pivoted thereto. Fig. 4 is an elevation similar to Fig. 1, showing the catch formed as a leafspring. Fig. 5 is a plan and Fig. 6 an end view of the catch-lever.
The fitting a is shown provided with the burner Z2 and with the plug 0, having the key or thumbpiece CZ for 'turning the same, and the stop-pin CZ to engage stop-shoulders e upon the fitting in the usual manner.
To the outer end of the socket o. is applied a band f, having lugs f at the ends, which are drawn together by the screw g to form a clampwing for securing the attachmentin place. Upon the cuter edge of this band are provided the lugsf, bent into hooks conforming with and embracing the outer flange of the fitting to prevent the lateral displacement ofthe clamp-ring f. The lower side of the ring is formed With perforated ears f3, to which is pivoted the dat block h, clamped to the catch-lever Z by means of a screw t', inserted in the slotj. The catch-lever, which is shown herein formed ot sheet metal, terminates at the end adjacent to the plug c in a yoke Z', embracing the same, having its extremities turned downward to offer a substantial bearat the opposite end with a projecting portion Z2, forming a handle for actuating the same. A spring r is interposed between the block h and the ring f and operates to press the yoke normally upward into the path of the stop-pin.
It will be observed that when the gas is turned ott and the key d and stop-pin CZ assume the positions shown in full lines in Fig. l the stop-pin is positively con tned between the stop-shoulder e and the ends of the yoke Z until the yoke is depressed by elevating the handle Z2, when the plug becomes free to turn, as indicated in dotted lines in the said figure. The release of the lever permits the yoke to rest against the under side of the stop-pin by the actuation of the spring until the cock is again closed, when the pin is rotated out of engagement with the yoke and the latter assumes its normal position in the path of the pin, as before.
It will be observed that the attachment as above described is adapted for application to fittings of diierent sizes and proportions by meansof the slot 7' in the lever, whereby the position ot the block h and its clamp-screw "i may be adjusted to suit the distance of the earsy3 from the center of the plug c.
In Figs. 4f, 5, and 6 I have shown a somewhat simpler form of catch for effecting the object described above. In this form of the invention the spring catch-lever, which is formed 'ot a leaf-spring s, is clamped at one end by means of a screw o upon a suitable seat n.2 upon the fitting, which may be cast integral therewith or soldered thereon; or the ange may be tiled flat to receive such spring-lever. The free end of the lever is provided with a yoke s', similar to that of the lever Z, above described, having radial notches sa in its upper side of any desired number and spacing to engage the pin in its dilerent positions. The degree of abruptness of these notches and their depth will determine their manner 1ngsurface vfor the stop-pin QZ, and is formed of engagement with the stop-pin, Whether their action shall be positive or shall offer Y merely a yielding barrier to the motion ot' the plug. A thumb-piece s3 is provided at one or shoulders at right angles to each other only one of the arms of the yoke would be necessary, as the plug would be turned in the same direction at all times to close the cock, and that the stop-shoulders may be readily dispensed with by suitably varying the form of the operative end of the lever.
It will be observed from the foregoing description that the details of construction of the device are wholly immaterial to the essential feature of the invention, which is the spring-lever having a yoke embracing the plug and lying normally in the path of the` stop-pin.
In the following claims I have made reference to the inner face of the spring-lever, by which is to be understood the face of the same presented to the cock and nearest thereto.
Iam aware that it has been proposed heretofore to form peripheral notches in the washer upon the smaller end of the plug of a gas-cock for engagement with the outer ends of a pair of spring-arms which lie and are movable only in the plane of such washer, and that it is not new to project a flat spring into engagement with the key of a gas-cock, such spring y being movable transverse to the center line of the key. My invention differs from such constructions in comprising a spring formed with a rigid yoke embracing the plug of the cock to lock its stop-pin by Contact with the extremity of an arm of the said yoke when the plug is in its normal or closed position and adapted to be shifted out of the path of the pin and transverse thereto and to rest thereon when the plug is turned in any other than its normal position.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, with a cock having a rotary plug provided with a lateral stop pin, of a spring lever having one end secu-red upon the cock and the other end formed with a rigid yoke embracing the plug and lying normally in the path `of the said `pin with one of its extremitiesin engagement therewith when the plug is in its closed position to lock Kthe same from turning, and adapted to be shift-ed out of the plane of such path and transverse thereto to release the said pin and to rest, its 1 inner face against the said pin in all other positions of the latter, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with a cock having a rotary plug provided with a lateral stop pin, of a springlever having one endsecured upon the cock and the other end formed with a rigid yoke embracing the plug with its extremities bent at right angles thereto to engage the said pin in order to lock the plug in its initial position with its stop pin transverse to the spring lever, and adapted to be shifted f transversely out of the plane of the path of the said pin to release the latter and to rest with its inner face against the said pin in all other positions of the latter, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with a cock provided with a rotary plug having a stop pin, of a lever having a rigid yoke at one end embracing the said plug and adapted to engage its pin, and formed With a slot intermediate to its ends, perforated ears upon the cock, a block secured adj ustably to the said lever by means of a screw inserted in its slot and having an ear pivoted to the ears upon the cock, and a spring for sustaining the said lever with its yoke normally in the path of the stop pin, substantially as shown and described.
4:. The combination, with a cock provided with a rotary plug having a stop pin, of a clamp ring fixed thereon and provided with perforated ears projected therefrom, a lever having a yoke at one end embracing the said plug and adapted to engage its stop pin, and formed Witha slot intermediate to its ends, a block secured adj ustably to the said lever by means of a screw inserted in the said slot and having an ear pivoted to the ears upon the clamp ring, and a spring for sustaining the said lever with its yoke normally in the path of the stop pin, substantially as shown and described.
, 5. The combination, with a cock provided with a rotary plug having a stop pin, of a divided clamp ring formed with outwardly projecting hooks :along one edge in engagement with the outer end of the fitting and provided with perforated ears as described, a lever having a yyokeat one end embracing the said plug and adapted to engage its stop pin, and formed with a slot intermediate toits ends,a block secured adjustably to the said lever by means of a screw inserted in the said slot and having an ear pivoted to the ears upon the clamp ring, and a spring for sustaining the said lever with its yoke normally in the path of the stop pin, substantially as herein shown and described.
6. The attachmentforgas-cockscomprising a divided clamp ring, a lever provided at one end with a yoke adapted to embrace the plug of the vcock and having a longitudinal slot intermediate to its ends, a block pivoted to the said clamp ring and secured adjustably to the lever by means of a screw inserted in its slot, and a spring interposed between the said block and the clamp ring, as and for the purpose set forth.
