GAS-BURN ER ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,518, dated December 26, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Burner Attachments; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains tomake and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a gasburner with more positive and sure mechanism for automatically and completely turning off the gas when the means for holding the burner-valve open, is released.
With such an object in View, my invention consists in the peculiar manner of constructing and arranging the difierent parts as will be fully described hereinafter and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my improvement applied to an ordinary gas-burner; Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same, detached from the burner. Fig. 3 represents a top View; Fig. 4 a sectional view taken on line XX of Fig. 1.
The reference letter a represents a gasburner of the ordinary type, provided with the usual valve-stem b. This valve-stem b is provided with a laterally and downwardly extending arm a rigidly secured thereto and forming a shoulder against which one end of a coiled spring 01 abuts. This spring is confined within a circular casing e provided with inwardly extending upper and lower flanges f and g. The valve-stem b is also provided with a hinged thumb-piece h, having an edge 1 arranged to engage 'a series of notches '1 in the inner edge of the upper flange f. By means of this series of notches and the hinged thumb-piece h, the flow of gas may be regulated and the flame thus made dim or bright, according to the wishes of the operator.

Having described my invention in detail, I will now describe its operation.
I will assume that the flow of gas is cut 0E, and the thumb-piece h is therefore at right angles to the path of the gas; and it is desired to turn on the gas in order to light the same. The thumb-piece is turned longitudinally withthe path of the gas and then swung on its hinge until its edgel engages one of the series of notches i in the upper flange f of the casing e, where it is held by said notches. The thumb-piece, and consequently the valve-stem, is turned against the tension of the coiled spring d, owing to the lateral arm a being rigid with the valve-stem. Thus the cut-off is held by the notches "5 against the tension of the spring (1. Now, if it is desired to turn out the gas, it is only necessary to swing the thumb-piece it clear of the notches v1, and the tension of the spring 01 will force the valve-stem around and across the path of the gas, thus effectively cutting off all escape of the same. It will be seen that there is no possible chance of the gas being allowed to leak by the carelessness of the operator, for it is only necessary for him to release the thumb-piece from the notches in order to have the gas out OK. 7

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
