O. G. BARLOW IGNITION SWITCH LEX IER Filed August 14, 1924 Patented Jan. 5, 1926 ORRIN G. BARLOW, 0F DAVENPORT, IOWA.
IGNITION-SWITCH LEVER.
Application fled August 14, 1924. Serial No. 732,113.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ORRIN G. BARLOW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition-Switch Levers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ignition switch levers and the objects of my invention are to provide a switch lever which can be operated without interference of the switch keys or objects attached thereto and which will be simple and inexpensive to manufacture and install.
I attain these objects by the means illustrated' in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1v shows a plan view of an ignition switch lever and key seat as now commonly installed and Figure 2 shows a side elevation thereof; Fig. 3 shows a plan view of an ordinary ignition switch lever with my attachment applied thereto, and Figure 4 is a side elevation thereof.
The ordinary ignition switch comprises a hub, 1, with a key seat, 2, centrally located therein and a lever or handle, 3, formed integral with the hub and extending downwardly therefrom.
My improvements consist of an annular hub, 4, adapted to encircle the hub, 1, and a yoke, 46, formed integral with the hub, 4-, and adapted to embrace the handle, 3, and a handle, 4', formed integral with the hub, l1, and the yoke, P.
Set screws, (3 and 7, are provided to secure the yoke, 4, upon the handle or lever, 23. The handle, 49, is preferably ball-shaped, but may be of any desired form.
In the operation of an automobile provided with an ignition switch lock and key, it is common practice for the key to be carried upon a ring with many other keys or in some sort of a key holder, such as a leather case. hen the ignition key is placed in the lock and the ignition switch turned, it is necessary to leave the key in the look as long as it is desired to keep the engine running. Consequently, if a bunch of other keys or a holder is attached to the ignition key, they are left hanging from the key in the lock and as the ignition switch handle, 3, as now commonly constructed pr'ojects downwardly, the other keys or the holder, will hang in front of it and make it more or less difficult to grasp the ignition switch lever quickly and accurately. lVith my device, there is nothing in the way to prevent the hand of the driver from reaching the handle, 4", quickly and accurately and the danger and delay from fumbling is overcome.
I claim:
1. An attachment for an ignition switch for automobiles, comprising an annular hub, a yoke adapted to embrace the hub and handle of the ignition switch, with an upwardly projecting handle united thereto.
2. An attachment for an ignition switch for automobiles, comprising an annular hub, a yoke adapted to embrace the hub and handle of the ignition switch, with an upwardly projecting handle united thereto, and means for securing the yoke to the handle of the ignition switch.
3. The combination with an ignition switch lever, of an annular hub and yoke adapted to embrace the ignition switch, hub and lever, and a handle united thereto.
4. The combination with an annular hub, of a yoke and a handle united thereto, and means for securing the hub and yoke upon the hub and switch lever of an automobile ignition switch.
In testimony whereof he ariixes his signature.
ORRIN G. BARLOW.
