Description

WIILLLIAM PATTON.
Improvement in Sash-Holders.v
Patented May 21', 1872.
Wlbmmw PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM PATTON, OF TOWANDA, PENNSYLVANIA;
IMPR OVEMENT IN SASH-HOLDERS.
V Specification forming pint of Letters Patent No. 127,100, dated May 21, 1872.
. then set forth in the claim.
Figure 1 is a front view of the window-frame and sashes with my sash-holder attached. Fig. 2 is a sectional side view of the same.
Like letters and figures indicate the like parts.
My sash-holder is composed of two metallic pieces-a plate, a a, and latch or bolt 0. The plate has a cavity underneath the center of it lengthwise, and a slot through the middle of it as far across it as to the opposite of the roof of the cavity 12 b. The latch has two arms or journals, 0 c, at right angles with the bottom, and a forward projection, e, from its top, and is drawn through the slot in the plate until the journals come opposite to the cavity, into which they are drawn and in which they turn. The plate is fastened to the right or left of the top of the lower sash. Small oblong holes or recesses at suitable distances apart, Nos. 1 2 3, or more, if necessary, are mortised in the upper sash-frame, the upperend of which slope upward and the lower end downward, corresponding to the slope of the forward projection of the latch and into which the projection of the latch drops, when opposite to it 5 and extension of the lower end of when it drops into the mortise it stands perpendicular to the plane of the upper sash, and prevents either sash from moving up or down from that point; and does the same when it drops into the mortises above, when the upper sash is stationary. But when both sashes are movable, as arethose that are operated by ropes and pulleys, they are stationary when closed, or, at whatever other point the latch falls into the mortises, neither sash can be moved without moving both together. The latch is lifted from the mortises by pressing upon a lever or thumb-piece, d, which is an the latch, and which also operates as a check to prevent the latch from falling back beyond its forward gravitating power. A metal bushing, corresponding with the mortised holes or recesses, may be so inserted in the sash as to strengthen the mortise, and give it a finished appearance.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved sash-holder, cast in two pieces, consisting of the plate a a, recessed beneath, and the latch or bolt 0, journaled at c c, and having a lever or thumb-piece, d, and projectin g beveled point c, all as described and shown, whereby the holder, fitting in recesses of the sash-frame, locks both sashes automatically together, or allows them freely to pass each other, when the latch is detached, by pressing on the lever or thumb-piece of the same.
