Specification of Letters Patent.
Petse e J was 1918- Application filed November 17, 1917. SerialNo. 202,550.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALKER LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bigprairie, in the county of Holmes and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Music-LeafTurners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to music leaf turners and it .consists in the novel features hereinafter descr bed and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a turnerof simple and durable structure which may be applied to the music shelf of a piano or similar instrument or .to a music, stand which may be easily and quickly manipulated for the purpose of turning a sheet of music at such time as it is desired to effect the same.
With this object in view the turner comprises a clamp adapted to be applied to the shelf or stand with a tube adj ustably mounted thereon and a spring supported rod traversing the length of the tube. A sleeve is mounted at the upper end of the tube and a second tube is connected with one end of the sleeve. A spring pressed rod is located in tube and the sleeve and is provided with a the upper end of the first mentioned rod whereby the second mentioned rod may be held at a retracted position against thetension .of the spring adapted to actuate the same. A head is carried at the end ofthe second mentioned tube and a lever is pivoted therein and connected with thesecond mentioned rod. A fork member is pivoted upon the free end of the lever and receives between the branches of its fork a pin which is attached to the head. An arm is attached to the said fork and extends beyond the head and a spring clip is mounted upon the arm and carries a depending rod. The clip is adapted to receive a sheet of music between its opposite side portions and therod extends behind the sheet and the parts are so arranged thatwhen the rod which is slidably mounted in the first mentioned tube is depressed it releases the .second. mentioned rod which is actuated by the spring which operates upon the same whereby the lever is swung which in turn swings the fork and the arm attached thereto whereby the clip and rod attached to the clip turn the sheet of music.
notch adapted .to receive,
Fig. 5 is a sectional view of the retaining means for the leaf turning mechanism.
Fig. 6. is a sectional view of the support for the leaf turner.
The music leaf turner comprises a clamp member l which is provided with a screw 2- whereby the frame may be secured to a shelf or stand in ausual manner. Atube 3 passes vertically through the clamp member 1 and is adjustably secured therein by means of a set screw 4 which is threaded in the clamp member and adapted to bear at its inner end against the side of the tube. It is 'apparent that by loosening the set screw the tube 3 maybe adjusted vertically in the clamp member and when at a desired position may be secured by tightening the said set screw. The said screw is provided at its lower end with a longitudinally disposed recess 5. A rod 6 traverse'sithe length of the tube 3 and the said rod is provided at its lower end with an angularly disposed extremity 7 which is normally received in the recess 5 ofthe'said tube. A spring 8 is connected at one end with the rod 6 and the other end of the said spring bears against a collar 9 which is located at a fixed point within the tube 3. The spring 8 is under tension with a tendency to normally hold the extremity 7 of the rod 6 in an elevated position in the recess 5 of the tube 3. However, the said rod may be depressed by exerting pressure in a downward direction upon the extremity and then the rod'may be turned whereby the extremity is carried under thelower end of the tube and the upper end of itherod 6ma'y thus be held below the upper end of the said tube.
The music leaf turner also includes a sleeve 10 which is provided in the vicinity .of one end with an aperture 11 adapted to snugly receive the upper end of the tube 3. A set screw 12 is provided at one end of the sleeve 10 and is adapted to engage against the side of the tube 2 whereby the sleeve 10 is held upon the tube. It is apparent that by loosening the set screw 12 the sleeve 10 and the parts attached thereto and hereinafter explained, may be detached from the tube 3 and thus the parts may be compactly assembled for carrying in a music case or other receptacle. A tube 13 is connected at one end with the sleeve 10 in the vicinity of the aperture 11 and a head 14 is carried at the other end of the tube 13. A rod 15 traverses the length of the sleeve 10 and tube 13 and the end portions of the said rod project beyond the ends of the sleeve and tube. The rod 15 is provided at one end with a knob 16 and the other end of the said rod enters the head 14 herein before referred to. A coil spring 17 is located 'in the sleeve 10 and bears at one end against a fixed portion of the sleeve and at its other end bears against the collar 18 which is mountedon the rod .15. The spring 17 is under tension with a tendency to hold the rod 15 in a retracted posltion in the tube and sleeve. The'rod 16 is provided at its lowerside with a notch 19 which is adapted to receive the upper end of the rod 6 when the said rod6 is elevated by the action of the spring 8 hereinbefore described.
A lever 20 is pivotally mounted in the head 14 and one end of'the rod 15 is pivotally connected with the said lever at a point between'the ends of the lever. A fork member 21 is pivotally mounted at the free end of the lever 20 and the branches of the fork of the said member receive a pin 22 which is mounted at the upper side of the head 14. The head 14 is provided with an opening 23 and an arm 24 is attached to the fork member 21 and extends through the opening 23 beyond the side of the head 14. A spring clip 25 is slidably mountedupon the arm 24 and is of conventional'form or pattern such as the ordinary spring clip or r and is provided angularly disposed extremity 27 which may clamp used for gripping articles of apparel or sheets of paper for securing them togetherr A rod 26 depends from the clip 25 at itsv lower end .with an extend below the lower edge of a sheet of music. The upper portion of the sheet of music may be secured in the clip 25.
It is apparent that whenthe rod 15 is moved in an inward direction by applying pressure to the knob 16 the notch 19 in the said rod 15 will bebrought over the upper end of the rod 6 and inasmuch asthe said rod 6 is forced in an upward direction by the spring the upper end of the rod' 6 will Copiestf this patent may be obtained for secured in the clip 15 is retracted it swings the lever 20 whereby the fork member.21 is swung and the arm 24 is held approximately in alinement with the tube 13. The sheet of music is then 25 and extending over the extremity 27 of the rod 26. When it is desired to turn the sheet of music the rod 6 is depressed by exerting pressure in a downward direction upon the extremity 7 thus removing the upper end of the rod 6 from the notch 19 and under the'influence of the spring 17 the rod 15 isprojected to move longitudinally in the sleeve 10.- 7
' This movement on the part of the rod 15 swings the lever 20 whereby the fork member 21 which is in contact with the pin 22 becomes the obverse side of the sheet.
From theforegoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanyii g drawings, it will be seen that a music leaf turner of simple and durable structure is provided and that the same may be easily and quickly manipulated to effect the turning of a sheet of music.
Having described the invention what is claimed is':
1. A music leaf turner comprising a clamp, a tube attached to the clamp, a spring pressed rod located in the tube, ing means mounted on the tube and including a spring for actuating the same, a setscrew for detachably securing the leaf turning means to the tube, the leaf turning means being engageable by the rod to hold the same at a state of rest.
2. A music leaf turner comprising a tube,
