To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN EIOHERT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rulers, of which the following is a specification, refer` ence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in rulers, and relates more particularly to that class of rulers employed in connection with the ruling` of ledgers, journals, and other books of entry employed in connection with bookkeeping.

The invention has for its object to construct a ruler with slidable means for holding a ruling-pen and guide the saine, so as to make an absolutely true and perfect line; furthermore, a means for this purpose which maybe swung upon its support in a manner to bring the ruling-pen at different positions and angles and wherein the ruling-pen when not in use may be folded upon the ruler in such a manner that the latter inay be employed with out detaching the ruling-pen or its holding means from the ruler.

Briefly described, my invention comprises, in connection with the ruler of the ordinary form, a pair of supporting-brackets, in which is mounted a scaled rod having a sleeve slidable thereon from end to end of the rod. This sleeve carries clamping means for holding the ruling-pen and also carries an extension which engages the ruler and forms a guide to assist in holding the point of the ruling-pen upon the desired line, all of which construction, together with other details entering into my invention, will be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed outin the claims.

In describing the invention in detail referu ence is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specitication,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate correspondin g parts throughout the several views7 in which- Figure l is a perspective View of my iinproved ruling-pen, partly broken away, showing the position in which the ruling-pen is held for use. To put my invention into practice, I eniploy an ordinary ruler l, which may be of any desired length and width and may be provided with a scale along one or both edges thereof and with a metal ruling-strip in its edge or without, as may be desired. On the upper face of this ruler l, at each end thereof, is mounted a pair of brackets or standards 2, in which is secured the ends of the scale guiderod 3, extending the length of the ruler. The brackets or standards 2 are inclined slightly, so that the rod 3 will be suspended upon the upper face of the ruler at a point nearer to the rear edge of the said ruler than to its front edge. cured a transversely-extending journal-sleeve i 5. In this journal-sleeve is mounted for rotation a short bolt C, held therein by a nut 7, threaded on one end. To the other end of this bolt is secured a clamp or holder 8, which receives tl1e-ruling-pen holder 9. This clamp 8 consists of a strip of metal bent upon itself and adapted to be bound tightly upon the penholder 9 by a thumb-screw l0, which passes through the depending ends 1l of said clamp 8 and through a bushing 12, carried by the clamp. To the sleeve 4e is secured an inclined arm la, which is adapted to ride upon the edge of the ruler, as shown in Fig. 4, when the pen is being used, and thus retain the sleeve L1-, sleeve and cl'amp 8, and the penholder in position, as shown in Fig. l, while being used. It will be observed that this arm rests against the ruler and prevents further downward movement of the holding means for the penholder than is permitted by the engagement of the arm with the ruler. The rod 3 is preferably scaled, as the operator may by observing the scale on said rod determine the length of the line it is desired to make on the paper without closely observing the line when drawing the same.

When the ruling-pen is not in use, it may be readily turned backwardly and laid upon the top of the ruler, as shown in Fig. 2, this being possible by reason of the sleeve e being rotatable on the rod 3.

Fig. 4i is a transverse IOO I-Iaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In combination with a ruler, a rod supported from the upper face thereof, a sleeve slidably mounted on said rod, and a holder carried by said sleeve to receive a ruling-pen, said holder for the pen being rotatable independently of the slidable sleeve, substantially as described 2. In combination with a ruler, a scaled rod supported from the upper face thereof,a sleeve mounted on said rod, an arm carried by said sleeve for engagement with one edge of the ruler, and a holder for the ruling-pen rotatably supported on the sleeve.

5. In combination with a ruler and a rod carried thereby, aholder for a ruling-pen slidable upon said rod, and means for engagement with the ruler to limit the movement of the ruling-pen holder in one direction, substantially as described.

6. In combination with a ruler and a scaled rod carried thereby, of a sleeve slidably mounted on said rod, a journal-sleeve secured transverse to said sleeve, a bolt in the said sleeve, a holder secured to one end of said bolt, a nut engaging the other end of said bolt, and a depending arm secured to the said sleeve and engaging one edge of the said ruler, substantially as described.

7. In combination With a scaled ruler, and a rod carried thereby, of a sleeve slidably mounted on said rod, a journal-sleeve secured transverse to said sleeve, a bolt in the said sleeve, a holder comprising a strip of metal bent upon itself,and forming depending ends, 'secured to one end of said sleeve, a thumbscrew for securing the said ends together, and an arm secured to the first-named sleeve and engaging one edge of the said ruler, substantially as described.
