T all whom may concern: a I i Be it knownthat I, ORLAN A. HARRIS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Long Prairie, in the countyof Todd and State of .Minnesota, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stools, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to stools,

. and'm'ore particularly to'a milkingstool.

The primary object of the invention resides in the production of a stool of the above stated character wherein the stool seat is resiliently connected above its base, whereby the occupant may conveniently arrange the seat at any desired angle With re spect to said base, immaterial of the conditions of the ground surface.

Furthermore, I contemplate in providing a novel type of stool wherein the seat is rotatably connected with the base affording convenience to the user in first revolving the seat in a direction from the cow, in order to prevent the contact of the pail with the cow upon rising from said seat.

iVith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features, details of construction and combination of parts which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claim.

Referring more particularly to the accompanying drawing, in which like characters of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views, 5 denotes the stool generally, and preferably adapted to be used as a milking stool, but I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to the precise use of the stool, as the same can be adapted for use as a desk stool, counter stool or the like.

In order that a clear understanding of the invention may be had, the stool 5 is illustrated for milking purposes, comprising a base 6 consisting of a plurality of legs 7 to which a pedestal 8 is rigidly connected through the employment of a screw and bolt connection, denoted by the character 9. frusto-conical forn nandis secured between the upper confronting surfaces of the legs, assuming a vertical upright position. 10 designates the seat of the stool of circular form, and provided on its under surface with a depending shaft 11, the lower end of. which is of substantially circular form in cross section, while the upper extremity of the shaft is of conical formation. The purpose of the specific construction of shaft will be hereinafter set forth as the description of the invention is proceeded with.

Mounted on the under-side of the seat 10 for horizontal sliding movement is a U- shaped holder 12, the limbs 13 thereof passing through guides 14. These guides 14: are mounted on the under face of the seat 10 and secured thereto by fasteners 15, and converging in a direction toward the center of the stool to cause the holder to frictionally bind in the guides and prevent any loose movement thereof with respect to the seat, hence after the holder is once adjusted to the proper position with respect to the seat any acidental sliding movement of the same is prevented.

I employ in connection with a stool of the above stated character, a resilient volute spring indicated by the character 16 which serves to retain the seat at the desired angle wih respect to the base, consequently the occupant or party seated upon the stool will retain an upright position, more especially when the stool is placed or reposed upon an unlevel surface. To this end, after the reduced circular lower end of the shaft of the stool is projected through the contracted lower end of the pedestal with the volute spring 16 encircling said shaft, the lower reduced end of the spring contacts with the pedestal, while the enlarged convolute of the spring engages with the bottom surface of the seat. This manner of positioning the spring 16 to the stool will not only facilitate the seat being retained at the desired angle with respect to the base, but furthermore rotatably supports the seat on the base, affording convenience to the occupant, after the milking operation is completed, to revolve the seat in order that the pail of milk supported upon the holder 12 will not be overturned by the contact of the same with the cow. In order to prevent any accidental displacement of the shaft from the pedestal,
