PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. J. WERNERT, OF PAW PAW, MICHIGAN.
STOOL OR CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,790, dated September 28, 1880.
Application filed January 6, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. J. WERNERT, of Paw Paw, in the county of Van Buren and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Stool or Chair, oi' which the following is a specifica-tion.
Figure l represents a vertical sectional elevation of the stool. Fig. 2 represents a plan of the under side of the stool-seat on line x x ot Fig. 1, looking upward; Fig. 3, a transverse section on line y y, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical elevation of a section of the grooved socket. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional elevation of the same on line c z ot Fig. 4.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved mechanism for changing and adjusting the height of revolving seats of stools and chairs.
rIhe invention consists of a spring-actuated rod incloscd in a slotted cylinder that projects downward from the underside ot' a chair or stool seat into a grooved socket which is fixed vertically in the central standard of the stool or chain, said rod being provided 011 its lower end with a laterally-projecting lug or lugs, which is or are made to engage in the grooves of the socket and thereby hold the stool or chair seat at any desired elevation.
In the drawings, A represents the legs of' the stool; B, the standard, and U the seat or top. Secured in the plate D, which is centrally fixed to the under side of the top C, is a cylinder, E, projecting downward, and provided near the top, immediately underV the seat, with a transverse slot, a, and near its bottom with a transverse slot, c. Set within this cylinder E, so that it can revolve, is the vertical rod F, provided near its top with an eccentric lug, c, that projects through the slot a, and at its lower end with an eccentric lug, d, that projects through the slot c.
Fixed vertically in the standard B of the stool is a socket, Gr, composed of two like longitudinalpieces provided with annular grooves b. Within this socket Gr the cylinder E, containing thc rod F and carrying the seat C, is introduced.
In a recess, g, made in the under side of the stool-seat near its edge, is hinged an angular plate, H, to the short leg of which is attached one end of the bent rod I, whose other end is made fast tothe lug c of the rod F, and this plate H, rod I, and rod F are held in position so that the lug d shall engage in one of the grooves b of the socket Gr bythe spring K, which is secured within the recess g of the stool-seat, so that the said stool-seat with its attachments may revolve in whichever one of the grooves b the lug d may be engaged in.
By pressing the plate H upward with the hand against the seat oi' the stool, the rod I will be retracted so as to turn the vertical rod F in such a manner that the eccentric lug d shall be withdrawn from the groove in which it may be engaged and into the cylinderE, so that the stool-seat and cylinderE may be raised or lowered to any required elevation, and be entirely disengaged from the standard B, if 7o desired.
0n releasing the plate H the lug d will immediately project again through the slot c into one of the grooves b to hold the stool-top in position.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In a revolving stool or chair, the slotted cylinder E, vertical rod F, provided with eccentric lugs, grooved socket G, angular plate H, bent rod I, and spring K, combined and arranged as herein shown and described.
2. In a revolving stool or chair, the slotted cylinder E, vertical rod F, provided with eccentric lngs c d, and socket G, provided with annular grooves b, in combination, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. In combination with the legs A, stand ard B, and seat C of a stool or chair, the slotted cylinder E, vertical rod F, provided with lugs, grooved socket Gr, angular plate H, rod I, and spring K, constructed, arranged, and operated substantially as herein shown and described.
JN0. M. Jos. WEENEET.
