ARM-SHIELD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BYRON V. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newberry, in the county of Newberry and State of South Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Arm-Shields, of which the following is a specification.

This invention aims to provide a shield for the hand and forearm while cranking automobile or other motors, as the latter very often backfire with a suddenness that does not afford. the operator an opportunity to move out of the way of the rapidly rotating crank handle, which on backfire of the mo tor rotates in the direction of the operator. It is a well known fact that the impact of the crank handle against the hand or forearm of the user frequently results in the breaking of bones of these members.

More specifically stated, the invention preferably makes use of a glove of the character provided with a gauntlet, which is generally used by autoists, reinforced with relatively stiff elements along the back of the glove, to prevent injury to the hand or arm of the user, by the crank handle upon backfire of the motor.

The nature and advantages of the invention will be better understood from the following detail description when read in connection with the accompanying drawing, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of-parts as claimed.

In the drawing forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 shows a rear elevation of a glove constructed in accordance with my invention.

Fig. 2 is a sectional view therethrough taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.

The preferred form of the invention as herein illustrated is in the nature of a glove indicated generally at A, although I desire to have it understood that I do not limit myself to a shield of this particular character, as the shield may be made up of one or more elements designed to conform to the shape of the human forearm. herein illustrated is of the type generally used by autoists, and provided with a gauntlet B. At the back of the glove proper, is secured a plurality of spaced parallel relatively stiff elements 10, while also extending along the back of the gauntlet is a plurality of spaced parallel elements 12 of similar character. The elements 11 and 12 are preferably in the nature of rods constructed from steel, wood or other material and of any suitable dimensions. If desired the illner part of the back of the glove may be suitably padded as at 13, although this is not an essential feature and may be eliminated if desired. It will be noted that the relatively stiff elements 12 along the back of the gauntlet terminate adjacent the line of division between the gauntlet and the glove proper, which line of division is indicated at 14 to permit of free and proper movements of the hand. As above stated the shield is designed to protect the hand and forearm of persons who engage in cranking 'automobile or other motors, against injury by the crank handle on backfire of the motor. The crank handle in such instances rotates in the direction of the user with great rapidity, and unexpectedly. The impact of the crank handle against the hand or arm results in the breaking of the bones of these members, but this danger is wholly eliminated by use of a shield constructed in accordance with my invention, as will be readily understood. It might here be stated that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, and that such changes may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope of what is claimed.

What is claimed is The combination with a glove having a gauntlet, of a series of rigid strips secured upon the back of the gauntlet, and a second series of rigid strips upon the hack of the glove, the ends of each series terminating short of the line of juncture of the'gauntlet with the glove, whereby the glove may be folded transversely.
