Description

L. E. OTT
ROTARY BRUSH.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 19. 1920.

PATENT OFFICE.
LYMAN E. OTT, OF OAKFORD, ILLINOIS.
ROTARY BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented ltIar. 21, 1922.
Application filed June 19, 1920. Serial No. 390,151.
T 0 all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, LYMAN E. O'r'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakford, in the county of Menard and Stateof Illinois, have invented a new and useful Rotary Brush, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to rotary brushes, and" more particularly to rotary brushes employed for cleaning teeth.
It is the primary object of the invention to provide a power brush of' this character, and One which will operate to engage both surfaces of the teeth simultaneously.
A further object of the invention is to provide a handle or casing for the gears employed for revolving the brush members, the casing being of a construction to prevent injury to the mouth of the user.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, theinvention resides in the c0mbination and arrangement of part-s and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. i
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 illustrates a plan view of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 illustrates a longitudinal sectional view through the casing; and
Figure 3 illustrates an end elevational view of the same.
Having reference to the drawing in detail, the reference character 5 designates the casing of the brush, which is preferably tubular in formation, and constructed of any suitable material.
One extremity of the tubular casing 5, is closed as at 6, and provided with an integral bearing 7 formed on the inner surface thereof, which bearing accommodates one end of the main shaft 8 to permit the shaft to rotate in the casing.
A suitable opening is also provided in the member 6, which opening receives a portion of the flexible shaft 9. which carries a relatively small pinion 10, on one end thereof, which pinion meshes with a relatively large pinion 11, secured to the main shaft 8, to move therewith, so that rotary movement of the flexible shaft 9, and pinion 10, is imparted to the main shaft 8 to cause the same to rotate.
Disposed within the casing 5 is a partition 12 which is provided with openings forming bearings for the shaft 8 and 13 respectively, and as shown the main shaft 8 is secured to a pinion 14, which is in mesh with the pinion 15, keyed or otherwise secured to the shaft 13 so that when the shaft 8 rotates, rotary movement is imparted to the auxiliary shaft 13.
One end of the tubular casing is closed by a removable closure 16 which is also provided with openings forming bearings for the shafts 8 and 13 respectively, and it will thus be seen that by removal of the closure 16, ready accessmay be had to the interior of the casing 5 to repair the same or oil the pinion supported thereon.
These shafts 8 and 13 operate in parallel relation with each other, and each of these shafts carries a brush element indicated at 17, which may be of the removable type to permit the brush members to be replaced when the same .become worn or otherwise rendered inoperative.
In the operation of the, device, the flexible shaft 9 has connection with a suitable motor not shown, which motor may be connected with the usual electric power. which causes rotary movement of the flexible shaft 9 that communicates movement to the brushes 17 through the shafts and pinions supported by the casing.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is In a rotary toothbrush, the combination of a tubular casing having an integral closure at one end formed with a bearing opening and an internal recess therein, a removable closure for the opposite end, a partition within the casing, aligned bearings in said removable closure and partition, and brush shafts mounted in said last mentioned bearings and having intermeshing gears, one of said shafts being extended and seated in said recess, a brush on each shaft, and means for rotating said shafts.
In testimony thatI claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
