Description

Jan. 14, 1930. J, s, MCCAULEY ROTARY BRUSH' Filed NOV. 9, 1927 4. www@ Patented Jan. 14, 193() when JOHN s. MUCAULEY, oF BALTIMRE, MARYLAND ROTARY BRUSH Application led November 9, 1927. Serial No. 232,135.`
The present invention is'directed to improvements in rotary brushes.
The primary object of the` invention is to 'provide a power driven brush so constructed that brushes of various types may be utilized,
the construction being such that the brushes can be conveniently interchanged when desired.
Another object of the invention is to prom vide a device of this kind so constructed that the brush can be rapidly rotated through the medium of a train of gears, the brush Vshafts being` so Vconstructed that they can be easily and quickly coupled with the gear m train for driving the same or detached and other brushes of di'erent types substituted therefor.
In the accompanying drawing:
n Fignrel is a side elevation of the device, o partly broken away.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail sectional view showing m the manner in which the brush shaft is J mounted.
Referring to the drawing, 1 designates a sheet metal housing having narrow laterally spaced compartments 2 and 3 extending along n, the sides thereof, the compartment 3 having d carried by its side walls blocks 4 4, the
outermost block having a recess 5 formed therein. The walls of the compartment 2 have bearings 6 6 in which is journaled the shaft 7 carried by the gear 8, the inner end of o said shaft having a socket 9 thereon, the wall of which is provided with diametrically opposed notches 10, the purpose of which will be later explained. n
The brush 12 is positioned in the space between the compartments 2 and 3 and has its bristles 11 secured to the shaft 13, one end of which is provided with a metallic bearing cup 14, while the other end is provided with a cross pin 15 for engaging the notches 10 to interlock said shaft with the shaft 7.
A screw 16 is threaded in the blocks 4--4 and has a rounded head 17 upon its inner end for engagement with the cup 14, as clear- 9 ly shown in Figure 3 of the drawing.
Thus, it will be seen that the shaft 13 is 1 lspace between the compartments and having rotatably mounted between the and 3 of the housing. y i
Meshing with the gear 8 is a gear 18, the shaft 19 of which is journaled in the walls of the branch 2, said gear having a beveled gear 2O thereon which meshes with the beveledv gearv21 fixed to the inner end of the driving vshaft 22, said shaft having its inner terminal journaled in a bearing 23 carried by the rear wall 24 of the housing 1. This 60 shaft is also journaled in the wall 25 of the housing and extends into the bore 26 of the handle 27, the outer end thereof having an enlargement 28 provided with a square socket 29, said enlargement being rotatable in a ferrule 30. The ferrule is provided with a threaded flange 31 in which is threaded the inner end of the flexible casing 32, and in which operates the flexible shaft 33. The shaft 33 is connected to a shaft 34 provided 70 with a spindle 35 for detachably engaging the socket 29 in order to interlock the shaft 26 with the shaft 33. The shaft 33 is driven from an electric motor and when motion is imparted thereto the shaft 22 will be re- 75 volved and rotary movement imparted to the brush shaft 13 through the gear train in an obvious manner. Owing to the presence of the recess 5 in the outermost block 4, the screw 16 may be adjusted to compensate for wear. 80
I have illustrated a well known form of brush, but it will be of course understood that this brush may be conveniently removed upon adjustment of the screw 16 and brushes of other types substituted therefor, the substituted brushes being either of fabric type, or may be in the nature of polishing rolls using emery.
The housing 1 is provided with a hood 35 in order to collect the dust dislodged by the brush.
Having` thus described the invention, I claim:
1. A. device of the class described, comprising a handle, a housing carried by the handle, said housing including laterally spaced compartments which extend along each of two sides thereof, gears mounted in one of the compartments, a brush shaft located in the branches 2 one end detachably connected with one of the gears, a screw adjustably carried by thewalls of the other compartment for engag ing the other end of the shaft, and meansI 5 for driving said gears.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a handle having a bore formed therein, a housing carried by the handle, said housing having laterally spaced compartments extending along two of its sides, gears mounted in one of the compartments, one of said gears having a shaft provided with a socket, the other compartment having a screw adjustably supported by its side walls, la brush shaft mounted in the space between the compartments and having one end adapted to inter-- lock in said socket, the other end of the brush shaft having a cup therein 'for rotatably engaging said screw, and a shaft rotatable in the bore of the handle and having a gear car# riedrthereby adapted to mesh with one of the irst named gears.`
In testimony whereof Iaiix my signature.
