Description

'1. A. PARENT; SHOE SHINING MACHINE A,APPLICATION mtu FEB. 14. man
1,415,689. Patented May 9,1922'.
J/LPar'ehf JOSEPH ARTHUR PARENL, or MONTREAL, conrad SHOE- SHINING- MACH-IN Application-filed February 14, 1921.
To all fwzO/m, t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JOSEPH VARTHUR PARENT, a British subject, Shoemaker, re-
siding at #175 St. Ferdinand Street, in the city of Montreal, in the Province of Quebec,
in the Dominion lof Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shoe-Shining Machines, and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in polishing machines, and its main object is to provide a mechanically driven shoe polishing device that can be readily operated by hand. L
The invention will be understood with the aid of the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the polishing device, showing the same connected to a motor.
Figure 2 is an enlarged side elevation view of the polishing device, shown in sec-tion to disclose the inner arrangement.
Figure 3 is an enlarged sectional view of a portion of the connecting means to the motor shaft. j
Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each ligure.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is an electric motor having the usual shaft 2, one end of which is provided with a hole 3. The bearing 4 is threaded to receive a socket 5, said socket being connectedto a flexible tube 6 by means of the nipple 7. The other end of said flexible tube 6 is connected to one end of a handle 8, which is bored throughout at 9, by means of the nipple 10. On the other end of said handle 8 is threaded a rectangular casing 11 which is preferably made of two pieces suitably secured together and in which is secured the bushing 12.
On one end of the motor shaft 2, is secured, in the hole 3, the chain 13, said chain projecting through the flexible tube 6. Adjacent the connection of the handle 8 and the tube 6, the chain is secured to a shaft 14 which is suitably journalled in the bore 9 of the handle 8,.said shaft projecting inside the casing 11 and having mounted on its end a bevelled pinion 15. The pinion 15 co-acts with the pinion 16, which is mounted on the shaft 17, said'shaft 17 being disposed at right angle to the shaft 14 and being jour-` y i Specification of Letters Patent,
the casing being.
bushing and is secured to said casing for `.and having a longitudinal. bore which opens Serial No. 444,816.
nailed in suitable bearings in'said casing 11. On the end of the shaft 17 opposite the pinion 16 is secured the shaft 18 which has an enlargement 19 that lits in the bushing 12, the inner projecting end of said enlargement being provided with the lugs 20. 21 is a pin adapted to project through saidlugs 2O and the end of the shaft 17, thus securing the two shafts 17 and 18 together. On the outer projecting end ofthe shaft 18 is 'Patented' May-9,1922,
mountedthe brush'22, and 23y is a nut adapted to rigidly secure said brush on the shaft.
On operating the motor 1, the shaft2 will revolve the chain 13 which in turn will rotate the shaft 14, the pinions 15 and 16, and the shafts 17 and 18 and vthe brush 22.
The device is held by the handle 8 and the brush 22 should be applied to the boot orshoe lightly. The
to the driving motor by a liexible tube, it

lVhat I claim as my invention is device being connected can readily be manipulated, as it is light in i 11. In a brushing machine, the combina-y i tion of a portable casing having a handle rigidly secured to it for moving it about; a shaft section journaled within said casing;
driving means connected to one end of said shaft section; `a bushing in `said casing; ak second shaft section disposedxwithin the cas-v ingv in' alinement with having an enlargement which fits in said spaced lugs'between which the other end Vof said firstV section is interposed, the second section projecting outwardly of said casing; a pin passing through said lugsland the interposed end of the first sectionto connect the two sections together; and a brush carried by the projecting end of the'second section.
