ROTARY TOOTHBRUSH.

Application filed February 1, 1922. Serial No. 533,351.

To all whom it may concern.

Be it known that we, AUGUST H. JURK and PAUL SYRACUSE, citizens of the United States, residing at Bufialo; in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Toothbrushes; and we do hereby declare the followin to be a full, clear, and exact description 0 the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has 7 relation to tooth brushes and more particularly to an article of this character embodying a'rotary brush which is provided in a pair, the brushes being disposed to operate simultaneously upon opposite sides of the teeth and in a manner to obviate injury to the gums and insure a thorough cleansing of the teeth, particularly in the spaces therebetween. I

While the drawings illustrate an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood that inadapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor details of constructionmay' be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

The device comprises a frame or casing 1 which is preferably of sectional formation to facilitate the assembling of the parts. The frame or casing 1 preferably tapers throu hout its length and has forwardly exten ing arms 2 which diverge and termi-' nate in guards 3. Forwardly diverged shafts 4 and 5 are journaled in the frame 1 and guards 3 and each is provided with a rotary brush 6 at its outer or forward end.

The inner or opposing portions of the brushes 6 are exposed, whereas the remaining portions are protected by means of the guards 3 whereby to prevent injury to the lips or mouth in the use of the article. A sectional bearing 7 is disposed within the frame or casing 1 and receives the hubs 8 of earwheels 9. The inner ends of the sha s 4 and 5 are fitted to the hubs of the res ective gearwheels so as to rotate therewit The gearwheels 9 are in meshing relation at all times so that motion imparted to one is transmitted to the other, whereby both brushes 6 are rotated simultaneously in reverse directions. A handle 10 is applied to the frame or casing land receives a flexible shaft 11 which is connected to one of the gear wheels 9 whereby to rotate the brushes when the device is in operation. The shaft 11 derives motion from an electric motor 12 which may be suitably disposed and which is adapted to be plugged into a suitable connection of acurrent. supplying conductor.

The diverging arrangement of the shafts 4; and 5 result in a compact structure and arrangement and admits of the proper spacing of the brushes 6 whereby they are adapted to operate u on opposite sides of the teeth as indicate most clearly in Figure 1.

What is claimed is:

1. A rotary tooth brush having a first brush and a second brush to simultaneously engage the teeth at opposite surfaces thereof, a shaft carrying one of said brushes, a casing tapering inwardly away from the brushes and carrying said shaft, a handle extending from the smaller end of the cas ing in line with said shaft, "and a shaft diverging from the first shaft carrying the other brush and geared to the first shaft insaid casing.
