MATCH-BOX.

'1 '0 all to how it may concern Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. KON- SYNSKI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hammond, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Match-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improved match box and the principal object of the invention is to provide a match box so constructed that only a few matches, preferably one or two may be withdrawn at a time and to further so construct the match box that if desired, the match withdrawn may be ignited when taken from the box.

Another object of the invention is to provide improved means for limiting the number of matches withdrawn from the box at one time.

Another object of the invention is to so construct the match box that it may be formed from a blank of sheet material stamped and bent to assume the proper shape.

Another object of the invention is to provide a match box which will be light in weight but at the same time strong and durable.

Another object of the invention is to provide a match box which will be compact in structure and at the same time so constructed that it may hold a relatively large number of matches.

This match box is provided with a body or receptacle indicated in general by the numeral 10 and provided with a rear wall 11, a forward wall 12 and side walls 13 and 14, the side wall 141 being provided with a flange 15 engaging the rear wall 11 and the Specification of Letters Patent.

rear wall. being provided with a flange 16 engaging the side wall 11. This structure is clearly shown in Fig. 5 and from an inspection of this figure, it will be readily seen that when fasteners are passed through the flange 16 and side wall 14, the receptacle willbe securely held in the set-up position. Of course, if desired, fasteners may also be passed through the flange 15 and the rear wall 11.

The lower portion 17 of the rear wall 11 is separate from the side wall and is bent to extend in engagement with the inclined arms 18 of the side walls and is provided with side flanges 19 engaging the arms 18 and abutment flanges 2O terminating at their outer ends in tongues 21 bent to extend along the flanges 19 and secured by rivets 22 assed through the tongues 21, flanges 19 and arms 18. These arms 18 terminate in tongues or extensions 23 providing scratching surfaces so that the matches when removed from the holder may be lighted. The lower portion 241 of the forward wall is separate from the side walls and has its lower end portions 25 bent to provide a baffle which will engage the matches as shown in Fig. 4 and prevent more than a limited number from passing through at one time. Tongues 26 extend from this baffle 25 into the mouth or outlet of the receptacle and if desired fasteners may be passed through these tongues to assist in providing a rigid structure. The upper portion of the rear wall is cut to provide a hanger 27 and hinge ears 28 through which may be passed a pivot rod or pin 29 for hingedly mounting the cover 30 of the match box, which in its turn is provided with hinge ears 31 positioned upon the pin 29 between the hanger 27 and the hinge ears 28.

When in use, this match box will be suspended by a tack or small nail driven into the wall or other support and the matches will be placed in the receptacle. These matches will pass down through the receptacle into the neck with the lower match resting upon the abutment flanges 20. The baffle will prevent the matches from passing out under ordinary circumstances. When it is desired to remove a match from the box, the match will be grasped through the finger opening 31 as shown in Fig. 2 and one or two matches may be easily withdrawn. By drawing these matches directly upwardly from the flanges 20, they may be removed Without the matches being ignited. If it is desired to ignite the match when Withdrawing, the match may be movedso that the head of the match Will engage one of the striking tongues 23 and the match Will then be ignited.

Itwill thus be seen that there has been provided a match receptacle Which will be 1. A match safe comprising a receptacle,

having a rear Wall, side Walls and a front Wall, the rear Wall and one side Wall being provided with securing flanges, the lower portion of the front Wall and the lower portion of the rear Wall being separate from the side walls and bent to provide an outlet neck and a match receiving trough at the bottom of the outlet neck beneath the free end of the front Wall, the side portions of the free end portion of the front Wall being cut to provide a neck and head constituting a resilient baffle extending in operative relation to the match receiving trough.

2. A match receptacle comprising a body open at its lower" end and terminating in an outlet neck tapered forwardly and having side Walls and a bottom Wall terminating in a match receiving trough and a forward Wall free from the side alls and cut to provide neck and head constituting a resilient baffle terminating short of the match receiving trough.
