MATCH SAFE.

This invention relates to match-safes and their appurtenances, including match-strikers. ash-receivers, cigar-extinguishers, etc.

One of the main objects of the invention is to make it practicable to reduce the cost of producing and marketing articles of this character, and to simplify and improve their construction and appearance. In this construction the match-safe is inserted within a bowl or receptacle which serves as an ashreceiver, a cover being provided for the bowl. The cover preferably has provision for striking matches thereon.

One of the main features of the invention resides in so organizing the match-safe, and the cover, with their appurtenances, that the whole forms a single unit, which unit can be manufactured and sold as a separate article of commerce,,and is readily applied to such bowl as may be secured by the retailer from other sources. be made of glass, ceramic ware, wood or other material, and need not be manufactured by the producer of said unit. Hence the manufacturer of the match-safe does not need to provide an expensive equipment for manufacturing bowls, nor does he need to invest capital in procuring bowls to sell in connection with the match-safes and covers. It is only necessary for him to manufacture the match-safe and cover, and. furnish such unit to the retailer, who can select his bowls from a variety of sources, and merely place the cover and match-safe unit thereon. thus producing a simple. attractive and salable article for smokers use.

The disclosed unit will accommodate'it'self to a variety of sizes of bowls, the brims whereof may have a variety of forms and thicknesses; and the hook 17 may be re-shaped or bent to accommodate the brim of any bowl. After this is done, the partition device may be replaced in the match-safe, andmay then be secured by means of a tongue 22 cut from the matchsafe and pressed inwardly into an opening 23 provided in the side 19 of the partition device.

In the cover 10 is provided a slot or opening 24 through which burnt matches and other refuse may be dropped into the ash- Between said opening and the main curvededge of the cover is a matchstriking aperture 25, and beneath this aperture is a receptacle or pocket 26 in the form of a slideway,into which may be slidden endwise the sides 27 broken off from an ordinary paper box of safety-matches; these sides having the usual match-striking preparaton forming a coating thereon.

At theends of the opening 24 there may be provided upon the cover cigar-rests 28, elevated above the cover; these cigar-rests preferably struck up from the metal plate of which the cover is formed.

On its under side the cover may be provided, near its hinge side, with a cigar-ex bracket-plate 32, Figure 4.

This. spring cleaning-blade may be suitably supported at its ends upon a bracket-plate 32 fixed to the under side of the cover; the support for the spring blade being of such a nature as to allow an end wise play of the blade while it is being pressed back. Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:

1. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl.

2. A new article of manufacture in the form of amatch-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing'in an ash-receiver or bowl, the same formed to set within the bowl, and the cover formed to extend over the edge of the bowl to partly support the safe.

3. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, the safe formed to set within the bowl, the cover formed to extend over the edge of the bowl to partly support the safe, and said cover having an opening through which to drop burnt matches and refuse into the bowl, and also having an aperture through which an ignition-strip may be exposed, and having beneath said aperture a pocket open at one end and fitted to receive the sides of safetymatch boxes to be exposed through said aperture.

4. A new article of manufacture in the form of a matcl1-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said safe having means to hook over the edge of the bowl, to partly support the safe thereon, said match-safe provided with an interior partition device and said hooking means being connected to said partition device.

5. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said safe having means to hook over the edge of the bowl, to

partly support the safe thereon, said matchsafe provided with an interior partition device and said hooking means being connected to said partition device, said partition device having a box-like form. sides of the box forming the partitions, and another side of the box having said hooking means, and interlocking means in the box and match-safe to hold the box in place.

6. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, the safe formed to set within the bowl, and the cover formed to extend over the edge of the bowl to partly support the safe, said match-safe having one side to extend straight across the bowl and its remaining sides being of a contour to match the interior of the bowl.

7. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said safe having means to hook over the edge of the bowl, to partly support the safe thereon, said match-safe having one side to extend straight across the bowl and its remaining sides being of a contour to match the interior of the bowl, and said cover hinged to said matchsafe at the top ofits straightside.

8. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, the safe formed to set within the bowl, and the cover formed to extend over the edge of the bowl, to partly support the safe, said safe having means to hook over the edge of the bowl, to partly support the safe thereon, said matchsafe having one side to extend straight across the bowl and its remaining sides being of a contour to match the interior of the bowl, said cover hinged to said match-safe at the top of its straight side, andsaid cover having an opening through which to drop burnt matches and refuse into the bowl, and also having an aperture through which an ignition-strip may be exposed, and having beneath said aperture a pocket open at one end and fitted to receive the sides of safetymatch boxes to be exposed through said aperture, and said opening being between said hinge and said aperture.

9. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and'a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ashreceiver or bowl, said cover having on its under side a cigar-extinguisher.

10. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said cover having on its under side a cigar-extinguisher in the form of converging jaws or lips into which the lighted end of the cigar is thrust.

11. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, and a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said cover having on its under side a cigar-extinguisher in the form of converging jaws or lips into which the lighted end of the cigar is thrust, a yielding device being provided at the convergence of said jaws in position to be pressed back by the end of the cigar, and to clear away ashes when recovering its normal form.

12. A new article of manufacture in the form of a match-safe, a cover hinged to the top thereof to form an article for placing in an ash-receiver or bowl, said cover having on its under side a cigar-extinguisher in the form of converging jaws or lips into which the lighted end of the cigar is thrust, a yielding device being provided at the convergence of said jaws in position to be pressed back by the end of the cigar, and to clear away ashes when recovering its normal form, said yielding device in the form of a member extending between said lips fromone side to the other and projecting from said lips, and meins holding said yielding device at its en s.
