Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1918.
Application led January 24, 1917. Serial No. 144,231.
To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH S. RionnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oronoco, in the county of Amherst and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and usefiul Improvements in Stands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved stand for oiiice furniture and the principal object of the invention is to provide an improved stand so constructed that a chair may be mounted upon a platform and a turntable rotatably mounted beneath the chair platform, the turntable carrying cabinets or desks so that when desired, the turn-table may be rotated to bring the desired cabinet or desk in front of the chair.
Another object of the invention is to so mount the turn-table that it may rotate freely about the standards carrying the chair platform and forming a pivot pin for the turn-table.
Another object of the invention is to so construct this device that the desks or cabinets may be used as means for turning the turn-table.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved device. p
Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View of the turn-table and a.
fragment of the base with the chair platform removed.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of mounting one of the casters.
The base or foundation 10 of this structure is provided with a track 11 for engagement by the casters 12 of the turn-table 13 and may be provided with a second track for the casters 14 positioned adjacent the center of the turn-table. This turn-table is mounted upon the foundation 10 as shown in Fig. 2 and is provided with a central opening through which passes the standard 15 forming a pivot pin about which the turntable will turn. The upper portion of the standard is squared as shown in Fig. 3 to prevent the platform 16 from turning upon the standard. This platform 16 is provided with rollers 17 forming bearings or antifriction devices engaging the track 18 of the turn-table and it will thus be seen that with the structure provided, the turn-table may rotate freely. The chair 19 is placed upon the platform 16 and may have the legs reduced and fitted into sockets formed in the platform to releasably connect the chair with the platform and prevent movement of the chair upon the platform when the structure is in use. In the drawings, there has been shown cabinets or desks 20 at the ends of the arms 2l of the turn-table and it will be readily seen that by turning the turn-table, the desired cabinet or desk may be brought in front of the chair, the turn-table being turned by grasping one or more of the desks and thus turning the turn-table. It is of course obvious that dierent types of desks or cabinets could be substituted for the ones shown, the ones shown, being simply shown to illustrate one type of cabinet or desk which may be used.
When in use, the person occupying the chair may have cabinets or desks for different uses positioned about him and when it is desired to make use of a certain desk, the turn-table will be rotated until the desired desk or cabinet is brought in front of him. This desk can then be used until a second desk or cabinet is needed, in which case, the turntable will be rotated in the proper direction to bring the desired cabinet in front of the chair.
What is claimed is A structure of the character described comprising a base, a standard extending from said base and constituting a pivot pin, a platform mounted upon the upper portion of said standard and held against rotation thereon, a turn-table rotatably mounted upon said pivot pin between said base and platform, anti-friction means carried by said platform and engaging the upper face of said turn-table, anti-friction means carried by said turn-table and engaging said base, a support mounted upon said platform, and cabinets carried by said turn-table for moving about said platform when said turntable rotates upon the pivot pin.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH S. RICHESON.
