To all whom t may concern; j
Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. ARWINE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of. New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Portable Hoisting Apparatugoil which the following isa specification. j
The invention .relates to portable hoistsI and more particularly to wheeled trucks adapted to support hoisting andother mechanisms, and the object of the invention is 'to provide a truck which shall oiler the re'quiredj extended base for supporting vthehoisting apparatus and its load reliably, and also permit the truck with its hoist to be moved through relatively small openings, as'factory doors or the like, and ywhich sh'allbel simple in construction, easily operated,-an'd .emi-r nently strong and serviceable. o The invention consists 1n certa1n`novel'teavtures andy details of construction andarrangementbywhich the above andv other objects vare attained, to bev hereinafter vdescribed and'claimed. The accompanying drawings form a part of this specification and show an Iapproved form of truck with ya hand-operated hoisting machine of the crane type mounted thereon. Figure 1 is a side elevationl of thev truck and hoi-st. A
Figure 3 is av horizontal section, partly in lplan view', taken on the line in Figure 1.
Figure 4L yis va central vertical section through the main portion of the truck, certain parts being shown in elevation.
Referring to the drawings, 1 is the tubular l standard of a hoisting machine, having a TheI Y On the upper disk is a vertical hol! vstandard 1 which extends throughbothhdisks I and is supp0rted,with vfreedom" toV revolve, on a step formed :bya plate 12'bolted vto the under face of'jtheH-disk 8 vandfvfpr"oviding a recess yfor the receptionothe lower extrem-` ity of'the standard. y
ard 1, vare `pivoted four radiallyv extending arms 13 each yequipped at its outer end with 4 Between the; disks at ltour; points circumterentially, the stand?,
'65 a casterV 14' arranged to swivel" oni-a hori zontal. ball-bearing` gti-,15 thus Support, thedisks and yhoist whiler permitting the f wholeto be rolle'deasily in any.y direction handle 1G attac iedltouone vot'y the'farms,or by any suitable means.
The arms are of sufhcient'length'itoialiord l i the required large baise'fareawhen positioned at 'right angles/to each other and. theyware arm in assuming-this eXtendedfposition-is upper disk, struck i vthe i of y,the The stops 18 are shownaslugs cast'iinteg# really v with Ithe fdisk57 I In this .extended i condition the i i operations may be .safely performed jandthe 1.
truck with its hoistand ,load` may 'be rolledv from one position 14.- asdrequired.
narrow openings, as through .aldoor leading When it is necessarydtoilmove 90 f from one sectionof the shop yor ,tactory'to Y to another the'icasters .y
another, the l pins 1'?v are A,withdrawn and l` the opposite pairs of arms swung awayy from their stops 18 toward each other into :the
collapsed `or narrowed position lshown in dotted lines in Figure 3, in which they strike against similar stop`sj19, withtheirrecesses l in coincidence with holes 2O inthe upper disk, and are held in such narrowed positions by rie-inserting the pins y17iny 4thelhol-is 20.` Thus conditioned the whole may pass through any opening ola widthgreater thanv the `diameter of the disks, and. the v,arms
again extended at right angles forvturtherv hoisting operations.y i
- The'vertical depth'of the arms is prefere ably but little less .than the space-between the disks,so that the'inner ends of the' arms.y are stitliy supported' and the rigidity of the `structure assured :whilepierniitting the held in this position each 'by a ypinfl- ,in-75" i Serted through aeholeinithe"upper'i'diskf? and into a corresponding recessgin,the.. upper p tace of thearnnandthe movement ,of each i, n,
limited by: a stopl .18 onthe' under faceot the 80 I:
arms to be swung to the limited extent required.
It the door-opening is su'iciently wide only lone of each ypair of arms need be swungk toward its mate and locked in such shifted position. y
Other means than the hollow post 11 and platelQ may be employed to lsupport the hoist with liberty for the latter to be revolved in swinging the load; the arrangement shown'is preferredl as affording the desired long rigid vertical bearing for the y standard l.
Although the invention is shown and described asl appliedto a hoist having a rotatable standard, it will be understood that the improved .truck may be employed to support other types of hoists, or with other mechanisms to which it'may be adapted.
' posed ,l kfholding them spaced apart, a centrally lonk aperture, a plate on the under face ot lowerdisk closing such aperture, a eyl1n- 1. ln a hoisting` apparatus, two disks disposed. horizontally one above the other, means for rigidly joining said disks and holding them spaced apart, a tubular post on the upper disk adapted to receive the cylindrical standard ot a hoisting mecha-I `n1sm,arms pivotally'mounted at their inner ends between said disks and movable horizOntally, and casters ontheouter ends ot said' arms.`
` 2. ln a hoisting apparatus, two disks dishorizontally one above the other, means for rigidlyjoining Asaid-disks and cated tubular post on the upper fdisk, and the lower disk having a centrally located said lmost disk having holes 'therein and each or lnism on said disks, arms pivotally mounter porting the standard oli a hoisting mechanism on said disks, arms pivotally mounted. at their inner ends between said disks and arranged to swing horizontally, stops arranged to limit suchv swing, and Casters on the outer ends oi said arms.
4t. ln a hoisting apparatus, two disks disposed horizontally one above the other, means for rigidly joining said disks and holding them spaced apart, means 'for supporting the standard of a hoisting mechanism on said disks, arms pivot-ally mounted at their inner ends between said disks and arranged to swing horizontally, the upper said arms having a recess therein matelling,` such holes, pins received in such holes and recesses for holding said arms, and casters on the outer ends of said arms.
5. ln a hoisting apparatua'two disks dis posed horizontallyv one above the other, meansy for rigidly joining said disks and holding them spaced apart, means for supporting the standard oiC a hoisting mechaat their inner ends between said disks a arranged to swing horizontally, stops arranged to limit such swing, the uppermost disk'having holes therein and each of said arms having a recess therein matching such holes, pins received in sueh holes and reeesses, and casters on the outer ends of 'l arms.
ln testimony that l claim the invention above set forth l ailix my signature.
