Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JosEPH HLADKY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rossville, in the county of Shawnee, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and.
useful Improvements in Spreader-Cranes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hoisting devices, particularlyto devices for loading wagons, and has for an object to provide a crane which may readily be removed from the wagon when the latter is entering a barn.
A further object is to provide a crane that may be easily manipulated to load the wagon box evenly.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the crane applied showing the wagon box in section. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the crane with one of the hinged sections of the standard housing swung open. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 33, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4-4, Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the crane. Fig. 6 is a plan view of the crane.
The reference character 10 designates the sides, and the reference character 11 the bottom of the wagon box. This wagon box is preferably provided at its rear end with a rotary spreader (not shown).
The crane comprises a rectangular bed 12 having one side in abutting contact with the wagon box side 10 and having a pair of angular braces 13 secured to its top face and hooked over the top edge of the wagon box side, being then secured to the side by bolts 14. A pair of inclined braces 15 are each secured at one end to the bed remote from the braces and are rigidly secured by bolts or similar connectors 16 to the wagon box side adjacent its bottom ends. The bed 12 is thus rigidly mounted in horizontal position upon the wagon box side.
Mounted upon the top face of the bed 12 is an annular bearing plate 17, this plate being preferably rectangular in cross section and being rigidly secured in position by means of countersunk bolts or similar connectors 18. Formed in the top face of the bed within the inner periphery of the bearing plate 17 is an annular ball race 19 in which is mounted ball bearings 20 the peripheries of the ball bearings extending upward beyond the top face of the bearing plate 17 Arranged upon the top face of the bearing plate 17 is a circular plate 21 which will be hereinafter referred to as a base plate and which is provided in its bottom face with an annular ball race 22 which receives the ball bearings. The base plate 21 is provided with a beveled periphery 23. For securing the base plate 21 in position, a retaining ring 24 is mounted upon the top face of the bearing plate 17 and is rigidly secured thereto by passing the before mentioned countersunk bolts 18 through the ring 24, bearing plate 17 and through the bed 12. The outer periphery of the ring 24 is flush with the periphery of the bearing plate 17 and the inner periphery of the ring 24 is beveled as shown at 25, this beveled edge overlying and loosely engaging the beveled edge 23 of the base plate 21. It is now clear that the base plate 21 is mounted for revoluble movement upon the bed 12.
Rising from the top face of the bed plate 21 is a tubular standard 26, this tubular standard having its lower end squared as shown at 27 and this squared portion snugly fitted into a squared opening 28 formed in the top face of the base plate. Formed in one side of the standard adjacent its top is an oblong recess 29 in the sides of which is journaled a sheave 30 over which latter is trained a cable 31 that extendsthrough the bore of the tubular standard 26 and through registering openings 32 and 33 formed in the base plate and bed respectively and is secured at its lower end to the winding drum 34, this latter drum being mounted below the bed 12 and having one end of its axle journaled in a suitable bearing 35 fixed in the wagon box side and having the opposite end of its axle terminating in a crank 36 by means of which the drum may be actuated and the cable wound thereupon.
Pivotally mounted upon opposite sides of the standard 26 adjacent its top are a pair of substantially parallel arms 37 between the outer ends of which is journaled a sheave 38 over which the before-mentioned cable 31 is trained, the free end of this cable being equipped with a grappling fork 39 of any preferred construction. The arms 37 are rigidly secured together at their outer ends by a brace bolt 40 so that they act as a single integral arm, which will be hereinafter referred to as a boom 41. The boom 41 may be lowered to horizontal position in order to load the portions of the wagon box remote from the crane and may be rocked to nearly vertical position to load the portions of the wagon box adjacent the crane.
For guiding the rocking movement of the boom 41 a pair of segments 42 are bolted or otherwise rigidly secured as shown at 43 to opposite sides of the standard 26 and have their free ends disposed in alinement with and considerably above the top of the standard. The boom 41 engages the opposed faces of these segments in its sliding movement. The free ends of these segments are connected by a brace bolt 44 which limits the upward movement of the boom. For limiting the downward movement of the boom, a transverse brace bolt 45 is arranged upon the segments preferably at the central point of the segments so that the boom when in its lowest limit of movement will extend substantially horizontal. A plurality of alined openings 46 are formed in the segments, these openings accommodating the bolt 45 which may be inserted through the alined openings 47 formed in the arms of the boom to lock the boom in any desired angular position.
For retaining the standard 26 in upright position I provide a novel form of housing designated in general by the numeral 48. The housing consists of an oblong block adapted longitudinally to form mating halves 49 and 50. These halves are each provided interiorly with a semicircular bore 51, the semicircular bores co6perating to form a circular bore that loosely receives the standard 26 when the sections are closed upon the said standard. The lower ends of the sections 49 and 50 terminate in flat faces which bear upon the fiat top face of the base plate 21 and the upper ends of the sections terminate in fiat faces over which is engaged a flange cap 52 having a central circular opening 53 for the reception of the standard. This cap when in position locks the upper ends of the sections together and must be raised vertically from the sections in order to permit of the latter being rocked open. A pair of spaced hinges 54 of ordinary construction are mounted upon the sections and hingedly connect the sections together. Mounted upon the sections diametrically opposite the hinges 54 are a pair of spaced latches 55 which retain the sections closed upon the standard. Secured to the section 50 of the housing adjacent its upper ends are the upper ends of a pair of guy wires 56 the lower ends 'of these guy wires being engaged in hooks or similar fasteners 57 mounted upon the wagon side 1.0 adjacent the wagon end boards. These guy wires 56 anchor the housing in upright position and hold the housing stationary while the standard 26 and base plate 21 rotate upon the ball bearings 20.
It is evident that when the wagon is entering a barn, the crane must be removed from its upright position. The weight of the standard 26 prevents of its removal vertically through the housing 48. However, by unhooking the latches 55 and lifting vertically the flange cap 52, the halves 49 and 50 of the housing may be rocked open so that the standard 26 may be raised vertically until its squared end 27 is disengaged from the recess in the base plate 21 when the standard may be conveniently removed later ally over the top face of the base plate. The standard together with the hinged sections of the housing may now be conveniently stored in the bottom of the wagon until again required.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the construction and operation of my invention will be easily understood without a more extended explanation, it being understood that various changes may be made in the form, proportion and minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A crane comprising a base, a standard, a rocking boom, and a housing surrounding said standard composed of hinged sections adapted to swing open and permit of the disassembling of said base and standard, and means for anchoring the housing against revoluble movement.
2. A crane consisting of a bed, a base revolubly mounted in said bed, a standard removably mounted in said base and movable therewith, a housing mounted upon said base and composed of relatively movable sections surrounding said standard, and means for anchoring said housing against movement.
3. A crane consisting of a bed, a base revolubly mounted upon said bed, a standard fixed to said base and movable therewith, a boom pivoted on said standard, a pair of segments secured on opposite sides of said standard forming guides to direct the sliding movement of said boom, means upon said segments for limiting the sliding movement of said boom, a lifting cable carried by said boom and standard, and means for actuating said lifting cable.
