GUSTAV HEOKEL, OF BELLEVILLE, ILLINOIS.
Specification forming partof Letters Patent No. 126,956, dated May 21, 1872.
Specification, describing a new and Improved Sewing-Machine Case, invented by GUSTAV HEOKEL, of Belleville, in the county of St. Clair and State of Illinois.
The invention consists in a sewing-machine case and table, constructed as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the table and cover, with a part of the latter broken out. Fig. 2 is transverse section of Fig. l on the line a: :20. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the table and the extension formed by the open case.
Fig. 4 is a section of Fig. 3 on the line y 3 Fig. 5 is a section of part of the permanent table and an adjusting-piece at the back, and Fig. 6 is a plan of part of the under side of the permanent table and the said adjusting back piece.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
A is the permanent table; 13, the frame or base whereon it rests. O is the vertically-adjustin g or shifting back piece, between which and the rear edge of the part A the back side D of the cover is arranged in a slot, as clearly indicated in Figs. 2 and 4,being hinged to the upper corner of A at E and beveled below the hinges at ,I ,,as A is correspondingly beveled at G, to allow of falling down backward, so that its upper surface will come to the plane of the upper surface of A. The piece 0 is provided with a groove, H, on the under side, over the back piece of the frame B, and it is also grooved at I, and it is provided with vertical guide-bars K, extending downward between blocks L, falling when the part D goes back low enough to allow the said back 1) to fall level with the said part A, and to rise again when said part D rises, for being as high as said part A and preserving a symmetrical appearance of the permanent table when the case is closed. It is raised at this time by the rib M on the outside and lower edge of the back D. The end pieces N of the cover are hinged to the back piece D, one at each end, as clearly shown in Fig. 3, and 'i'old outward at the ends thereof, and, like the said back piece, are supported horizontally level with the part A by the back piece 0. The top is of flexible material, 0, of any suitable kind, covered with ribs P, so as to bend over the oval tops of the end pieces, and it is permanently attached to the back piece D and the front side Q, but not to the end pieces N, and the said front piece Q is not attached to the ends. When the case is opened the front piece and top hang down behind, as shown in Fig. 4.
The end and side pieces of the case may have panels of glass or any other substance.
Havingthus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patcut-- 1. The combination of table A and base B, having vertically-adjustable piece 0, with the back 1) of ease, as and for the purpose described.
2. The case eonsistingof hinged back D, end piece N, flexible top"() I, and front Q,
combined with table A and support B O, as
