JAMES 'PLEUKHARP, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
iMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION TABLES.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Extension Tables, invented by JAMES PLEUKHARP, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio.
In the accompanying drawing, Sheets 1 and 2, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved table when closed 5 and Fig. 2, a similar view of the same when extended. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the false or removable top. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the table with the false top removed.
My invention has for its object to ,provide, for the use of the public, an extension diningtable, which shall occupy less space when closed, be more'firmly supported when drawn out, and be capable of adjustment to either position with great facility and despatch. To this end the table is composed, mainly, of three partsviz., a main frame, resembling that of an ordinary non-extension table movable sliding end attachments, provided with legs; and a central cover or false top.
In the drawing, A is the main frame, which is provided with four legs, one at each corner, like ordinary folding-leaf tables. It has, likewise, a side opening, closed by a hinged door, to permit the insertion of supplementary extension boards, the same resting on cross-bars attached to the under side of the frame. B B are the sliding attachments, which consist of segment-shaped pieces a, provided with legs b b, and connected with the frame A by means of extension slides D. Any desired number of slides may be used, according to the desired length of the table. The central pieces 0 of the slides are screwed to the end bars of the table, and the movable pieces 01 e are connected with these by castings or brackets 43, which are L-shaped. The manner of their attachment to the slides is illustrated in Fig. 5; also the manner in which the slides are grooved longitudinally to permit the movement of one upon the other. The false top E is provided with dowelpins 70 k, inserted in an oval-shaped piece, I, attached to its under side. When the top is in place the pins pass through holes in the pieces 0 c, and the piece lfits between the adjacent ends of the attachments B B, which are out out to receive it.
By this construction, when the table is closed it has a smooth top, and when drawn out the same piece still forms part of the top.
The end attachments, being provided with legs, cannot break down from any weight 1iable to be placed on them; and the same is true of the main frame, since its legs are stationary, and cannot, as in the case of ordinary extension tables, be drawn apart and thus weaken its back.
If preferred, the false top E may be made of less size than the main frame, A, and additional boards be inserted when the table is drawn out to its fullest extent.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of sliding end attachments B B and main frame A, as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the elements of the above claim, of the false top E, provided with dowel-pins k k, as shown and described.
JAMES PLE UKHARP.
