To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, MAXIM M. BET, a citizen of Russia, resident of West Moose J aw, Province of Saskatchewan, and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Weapons, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in weapons of types used in warfare and particularly to types in which are combined the elements' of a gun using explosive cartridges and a blade used as a sword.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a weapon which may be conveniently carried and in which are combined two separate weapons so that either can be used when desired and without one interfer- 'ing with the function. of the other.
A -further object is to provide an improved gun lock whereby rapidity of firing may be attained.
These and other like objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings; forming a material part of this specification, and 1n which:

In the drawings the numeral 10 design nates the blade or weapon, which may be made of any preferred size or style whatever. This bladeis rigidly attached to a body casing 11, terminating in a curved hilt or handle 12. Pivoted to the casing 11, by the screw 14, is a guard lever 15 side elevational View of a accordance with the invenwhich is also used in discharging the cartridges, the guard being held normally extended by means of a coiled compression spring 16, surrounding a curved stem 17, fixed in the extreme end of the curved hilt 12, at one end and extending through ari appropriate opening formed in the guard lever 15 at the other.
Secured alongside the blade 10 and eX- tending from the casing 11, is a barrel 1S, adjacent to the rear end of which is rota tably mounted a. cartridge carrying cylinder 20, the same being journaled upon a pin 21, Xed in the casing 11, and contains a plurality of openings 22 for the cartridges 23, the same being of ordinary type. "1"' A firing pin 25 is formed with a lever 26, pivoted upon the pin 27 contained within the body 11. Formed with the lever 2G is a projection 28, held normally upward by the bent fiat spring 29, so that the point ot' the projection 28 is held normally in en gagement with a star wheel 30, adapted, as it is rotated, to depress the projection and cause the lever 26 to oscillate. The star wheel is journaled on a spindle 32, on which is affixed a gear 33, the teeth of which are in engagement with a pinion 35, mounted on a spindle 3G, carried in a bracket 38, all of the several parts being contained in the casing 11.
Also mounted on the spindle 36 is a disk 38, on one side of which, by the pin 40, is pivoted a link 41, the other end being pivoted by the pin 42 to a sliding bar 43 mounted to move longitudinally, the bar having at its outerl end a transverse element 44, which carries a plunger 45, adapted to expel exploded cartridges from the cylinder 20.
Motion is communicated to the gear 33 by means of a ratchet wheel 48 secured on the spindle 32, the same being engageahle with a pawl 49, formed nt the end of an extension 50, of a lever 51, pivoted on the pin 52, set in the casing, the opposite end of the lever being pivotally engaged with a link 54, connected with the long arm of a bell crank 56, the short arm of which has a linlr` 58 pivotally engaged with the {i1-ing element or guard l5. Thus as the guard is pressed toward the hilt 1,2, the several disks are rotated, acting coperatively to expel exploded cartridges, while at the same time the cartridge cylinder is rotated in the following manner.
The casing 11 has 'an extension in which is pivotcd a pawl 59, having its curved inner side closely adjacent to the cylinder 20 and held firmly therein by means of a spring 60,
secured in the casing 11. The lower end of the pawl has a hook finger G2, engageable with which is a spur 65, secured to the upper side of the sliding bar e3, the arrange ment being such that as the bar is moved toward the front, the pawl is caused to rise, liberating one of a plurality of pins 66 set in the periphery of the cylinder, so that the same may be rotated, the pins being no1- mally held by the hook formed at the end of the pawl.

At the rear end of the cylinder 20, are a plurality of projecting pins 70, corresponding in .number to the chambers of the cylinder, operated by engagement with the upper end of a sliding bar 72, u hen pushed upf ward by the flat spring 73, the hooked end 90, being held in contact with the pins by means of a spring 92, pei-hitting the bar t0 move outward and clear the pins when moved downward by contact with a projec tion 74, formed on the lever 7 5, pivoted on-a pin 7 6, at one end, and engaged with a link 77, at the other. The opposite end of the link 77 is drawn rearward by a slide 78, operated by a projection 79 of the lever 51,
which is operated through the guard l5.
In operation, cartridges are. supplied by y hand to the left hand side of the casing 11,
and pressed into their respective openings 22 in the cylinder by means of a plunger 80,
extending from a yoke 81 with which is en-v gaged a guide bar 8:2, movable in brackets 83 and 84; secured to the end of the yoke \81, and having a crank 86, connecting with the link 87 by a pin set in the opposite side of the disk 38. l
The cartridges are pushed into position by the guard 15, simultaneously with the displacement of the exploded cartridges from the opposite side of the cylinder.
When the guard 15 is depressed or lowered, with respect to the hilt 12, the cylinder is turned a proper amount to admit the entrance 'of a new cartridge therein.
From the foregoin it will be seen that an eective device for oading and expelling cartridges, as well as rotating the cylinder, has been shown and described in such man- Lesaaoa ner that one familiar with the art can construct and operate the saine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a smally arm, the combination with a handle, a cylinder, a barrel, and a sword blade extending from said handle, of means for ejecting spent cartridges simultaneously with the entrance of a fresh cartridge, means for rotating said cylinder and means for eX- ploding a cartridge in said cylinder.
2. In a small arm, the combination with a body having a cylinder rotatably mounted therein, a sword blade rigidly engaged with said body and a Guard lever hingedly conllefed to said bol of means for expelling Cartridges from said cylinder, means for rotating said cylinder and means for detonating a cartridge in said cylinder.
3. In a gun mechanism, the combination with a body, a cylinder revolubly mounted therein, and a guard lever hingedly connected to said body, of means actuated by said guard lever for seating, expelling and 4 detonating cartridges, means for rotating said cylinder and means for holding said cylinder when in operative position, all of said means being actuated by said guard lever.
4. In a slnall'arm, the combination With a body, having a fixed blade, and a fixed barrel, of a cylinder revolubly mounted in said body, a gi'iard hingedly engaged with said body, said guard extending rearwardly coincident with the handle of said body, means for normally extending said guard, a gear train mounted in said body, said gear train being operated by said guard, means actuated by said gear train for seatin cartridges to said cylinder, means for expe ling spent cartridges coincidently with the entrance si fresh, cartridges, means for rotating said cylinder actuated by said guard, means for locking said cylinder when in an operative position, and means for detonating a cartridge in said cylinder.
