Specification of Letters Patent.
UMBRELLA AND SIMILAR STAND.
Patented June 4, 1918.
Original application filed. June 17, 1916, Serial 104,149. Divided and this application filed April 5,
To allcofiom it mag concern:
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new andusefullmprovements in Umbrella and Similar Stands, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to stands, racks the like of the class including a pedestal and a horizontally arranged supporting structure carried by the pedestal, and it consists in certain improvements in stands of this class whereby a structure strong and durable, attractive in appearance, capable of being readily assembled and disassembled, and adapted to be manufactured at the minimum of cost is produced. My i11- it may be applied to other constructions in cluding a pedestal or colunmar upright and a horizontal supporting structure adapted to be fitted over the pedestal or upright, the
characteristics of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved stand or rack Fig. 2 is a plan view structure thereof; i
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of said structure; and,
Figs. 4 and 5 are sectional views on lines g -y of Fig. 2.
a is the pedestal or columnar upright, the same being slightly tapered upwardly. To form a base for this upright there are provided the radial legs Z2 which may be attached thereto in any suitable manner but which are preferably removably jointed thereto as in my application for patent hear ing the Serial filed 1916, invention, which is that the rack or stand may be ofthe knock-clown class, if desired, and capable of being packed in the smallest possible compass for storing and shipping. As in my said application, the upright a may be extended upwardly as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1 and carry at the top a of the supporting the drawing as circular.
these ends being constructed as follows, re-
ferring particularly to Figs. 2 to 5.
he said structure in plan is shown in It includes a plate formed of laminated sheets (Z of fibrous ma terial (preferably wood having its grain crossed) cemented together, and the radial brackets e.
The plate has a central hole 7 adapted to fit the upright a and it includes an integral peripheral portion 9 and radial portions 72, together forming openings 2' which are adapted to receive the umbrellas, canes and the like.
The brackets e may each be formed of a single piece of wood arranged vertically and having a horizontal top face and an inner upright face j, the latter being inclined to the same angle as each side face of the upright a due to the upward taper of the latter and fiush with the margin of the hole Each bracket e may be secured to the under side of the plate 0 by brads is as shown in Fig. 4:, such bracket underlying a radial portion h of the plate, or each bracket may have a dovetailed tongue-and-groove conn ect1on with the under side of a radial porthe tongue and groove being extended pref erably into several layers To make the joint thus. formed permanent, so that this form of the ture may be uniform in character glue m may be employed in the joint.
A supporting structure thus formed is adapted to be fitted over the upright a in the manner shown in Fig. 1, being jammed down thereon so that the right will insure a tight duced. In the actual construction shown, the supporting structure binds against the tapering upright both in the plane of the segmental plates and below the same, where the downwardly projecting portions of the brackets e have contact with the upright.
This application constitutes a division of my application Serial No. 104,149, filed June 17th, 1916.
Having thus fully described my invenfee tion, what I claim as new and desire to sectire by Letters Patent is 2- 1. In combination, a columnar upright and a horizontal supporting structure fitted over the upright and including a horizontal support proper formed of horizontal layers of sheet-material cemented together, said support proper including a peripheral continuous marginal portion and radial portions together forming openings for the article to be received. a I
2. In combination, a columnar upright and a horizontal supporting structure fitted over the upright and including a horizontal support proper and radial brackets each bearing inwardly against the upright, said support proper inc uding a peripheral c011 Copies of this patent ma be obtained for fiire cents each, by addressing the tinuous marginal portion and radial portions together forming openings for the articles to be received and each bracket being secured to one such radial portion.
3. In combination, and a horizontal supporting structure fitted over the upright and including a horizontal support proper and radial brackets each bearing inwardly against the upright, said support proper including a peripheral continuous marginal portion and radial portions together forming openings for the ar ticles to bereceived and each bracket having a dove-tail-joint such radial portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
