' ATTORNEY- TIIE COLUMBIA PLANDGRAIH co.. WASHINGTON, u. c.
ALBERT WANNER, .13., or NEW YORK, N. Y.
FITTING-STOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patent d J l 15 1919 Application filed September 21, 1916. Serial No. 121,412.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT IVANNER, J r., a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fitting-Stools, of which the following is a specification. I
In an application for Letters Patent filed by me April 14, 1916, Serial No. 91,068, I have described and claimed a fitting stool whereon a person may rest his foot while having shoes fitted, and on which the person fitting the shoes may sit in which one of the principal feature was a pair of arched side members each shaped (in that case by bending) to substantially the form of a curve of a conic section and having one side of its arch arranged at a gradual incline and the other more precipitate.
The object of the present invention is to simplify and reduce the cost of manufacture of fitting stools of this class and make them more durable and also stronger. This I accomplish by forming the side members each of a plate of laminated sheet material, preferably cross-grained wood, having the layers thereof cemented or otherwise secured together, each member including an arched portion shaped to substantially the form of the curve of a conic section and having one side of its arch arranged at a gradual incline and the other more precipitate. In the preferred form, where there are for each arched member one or more upstanding side standards to which to attach the connecting means for said members, as the seat and foot-rest, each said member includes such side standard or standards as an integral or projecting part of a side-forming element of the stool.
I now proceed to describe my invention in detail, having reference to the preferred form thereof shown in the accompanying drawing, wherein,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved stool;
Fig. 2 is a side elevation and Fig. 3 an end elevation of one of the side elements of the stool;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on line l4 of Fig. 1; and,
Fig. 5 is a plan, partly broken away.
In the drawings, a a are the side elements, each being a plate composed of laminated sheets I) of suitable material, preferably cross-grained wood, cemented together. In sldeelevation, in which the layers stand in vertlcal planes, the plate is arched, as shown, the arch conforming to substantially the form of the curve of a conic section and having one side thereof arranged at a gradual incline, as at c, and the other more precipitate.
In the preferred construction, each plate includes upstanding standards cl and c, the former at the high part and the latter on the gradual-incline part of the arch. The top of the standard (Z is horizontal and the top of the standard 0 inclined more or less to the same inclination as the inclined portion 0 of the arch.
The side elements a a are substantial counterparts of each other.
On the top of the standards (l of the two side elements a a is secured a seat proper f, which may be upholstered, as shown in Fig. 5. On the tops of the standards 6 is secured a foot rest proper g, which may be equipped near its lower edge with a heel supporting ridge it.
As in my aforesaid application, a receptacle, open toward the seat, so as to be readily accessible therefrom, may be formed below the foot-rest g. This is composed of the front wall a and bottom wall j extending from one to the other of the side elements a a and suitably secured thereto, as by having their edges glued in grooves therein (Fig. 4:).
The said receptacle and a cross-piece is, connecting the rear portions of the side elements, serve to brace and give rigidity to the entire structure.
Semblance of individuality of formation may be imparted to the side elements, and an ornamental finish imparted thereto, by routing their outer faces, as indicated at Z and m in the drawing.
The structure, already strong and exceedingly durable, while light in weight and of convenient form to pick up or move about over the floor, on account of the arch formation of its base portion already disclosed in my aforesaid application, has increased strength and durability and is capable of being manufactured at the minimum of cost,
due to the side elements being composed of laminated sheet material having its layers arranged in vertical planes.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is An article of manufacture of the class described consisting of two substantially counterpart upright side elements each com posed of laminated sheet material having its layers arranged in Vertical planes and each including an arched portion shaped to sub- 0 stantially the form of the curve of a conic ALBERT WANNER, JR.
flopiel of this patent may he obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
