To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES FORTH, a citizen of the United States. of America, residing at 26 Wellington street, in the city of Ottawa, Province of Ontario, Domlmon of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Switch-Locks, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to improvements in switches and particularly refers to the lock thereof and the objects of theinvention are a to prevent the key being withdrawn from the look when the switch is open, to permit of the automaticlocking of the switch, to facilitate in assemblmg the lock to the switch lever, to render the lever capable of being used on any switch at present in use, to simplify the construction and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions re-.

With the above and other Objects in view the invention consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part ofthe same.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a switch stand of any usual construction provided with the lever B, and carrying the tongue C having an orifice therethrough designed to coact with the lock D operatively mounted on the said lever.
Thelever Bis formed with a bifurcated end, the arms 11 of which are pivotally at tached to the switch stand A, and is further provided with an integral caslng E embraced bymthe said arms intermediate of their length and designed to contain the parts of the lock. 1
The side members of the casing E are formedby the arms 11, while the ends 12 and the top 13' are integral therewith, the said top carrying a curvilinear hollow projection 14 adapted to house the end of the tongue (I, and being further provided with a. keyhole therethrough above which the cover 15 is pivotally mounted, so preventing moisture and dirt from accumulating in the interior of the lock. The. casing is completed by the removable bottom 16 carrying the lock mechanism operatively mounted thereon.
The bottom 16 is formed with a bifurcated end, the arms 17 of which are provided with diate of its length witha lateral projection 24,the inneredge of the locking bolt being provided with a curvilinear projection 25 embracing the keylspindle. 26 and cut away to form a shoulder 27. i
The end ofthe locking bolt 22 remote from .the end 23 is provided with a tongue 28 adapted to abut with the outer face of a U-shaped member129 formed integral with the bottom 16, which member is designed to embrace one end of the spiral spring 30 the other end of the spring engaging the projection 24. l
Co-aoting with the locking bolt 22 is a tumbler lever 81 pivotally mounted intermediate of its length to the upper face of the bottom 16, and provided with an offset end 32, the under face of which is substantially beveled, the said lever being provided in termediate of its length with a projection 33 designed to coact with the shoulder 27 of the locking bolt.
This tumbler is spring controlled and is provided at the end remote from the ofi'set end 32 with an offset tongue 84 having an orifice therethrough, with which one end of the spring. 35 mounted on the pin 36 engages, the other end of the spring being arr-- chored to the bottom 16.
The assembly of the lock and lever will be readily understood from the foregoing description.
When the switch is being opened, the
wards of the key engage the locking bolt 22 and laterally displace it against the action of the spring 30 and disengage the end 28 from the orifice in the tongue C, where'- upon the lever is rotated upwardly and the switch turned into: the desired position. The: locking, bolt 22 on being. thais displaced permits the tumbler lever 3f to be rotated under the action. of the spring: 35, and the projection 33 engages with the shoulder 27 so retaining the locking bolt in a retracted position, and it will be evident that since the curvilinear projection 2'5 underlies the keyhole inthe top of the casing Ev it is quite impossible to withdraw the said key while the switch is open.
In closing the lever the tongue 0 engages with the .ft'set beveled ends 23 and32 of the lo'cking bolt 22 and tumbler lever 31 respectively, displacing the same laterally and when the lever B has been brought to its closed position the end 23 of the locking bolt 22'engages withthe' orifice in the tongue C'while' the end 32*of the tumbler lever engages with, thelateral face of the. said tongue as illustrated in Fig. 6.v
It will be readily seenthat theb'evel on the end 23 ofthe locking. bolt 22 is shorter than the bevel on the end 32 0f the tumbler lever 3'1,' so* that the locking bolt is dis placed while the tongue C is still'w'iping the end. 32,. which is subsequently displaced so allowing. the key to be withdrawn, and causing, the projection 33' to c'o'act with the shoulder 27 and prevent the locking bolt 22 becoming inadvertently displaced.-
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely difierent embodiments of my invention, withinthe scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope: thereof, it is intended that all mattericontained in the accompanying specifica tion anddrawingsshall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense. VVhat Iclaim as my invention is:
Iii-The combination with a switch stand, including a switchlever and tongue, of a lock comprising a removable plate having a bifurcated end, a locking bolt pivotally mounted on the plate, and provided with an offset beveled end operating transversely acrossthc bifurcated end of the plate, and
projection on the locking bolt provided with a suitable shoulder, and a pivotally mounted tumbler lever coactingwith the shoulder and provided with an ofi set beveled end operating transversely across the bifurcated end of the plate.-
3. The combination with a switch stand,-
including a switch lever and tongue, of a casing. integral with the switch. lever and provided with a hollow curvilinear projection,- a removable plate coacting' with the lover, a spring controlled locking bolt pivotally mounted on the plate provided with an offset beveled end, and a spring controlled tumbler lever coactin'g with the locking bolt and provided with an offset beveled end.
4. The combination with a switch stand including a switch lever and tongue, of a lock comprising a pivotally mounted locking: bolt provided with an ofiset beveled end, a curvilinear projection on the inner edge of the locking bolt provided with a shoulder, and having an offset beveled end,
as and for the purpose specified.
5. In combination with a switch stand, including a switch lever and tongue, of a locking bolt pivotally mounted on the plate, provided on one end with an ofisct beveled part operating transversely across the bifurcated end of the plate, the opposite end of the locking bolt having a projection adapted to abut with the outer face of a U shaped member, a spring having one end bearing on the inside of the U shaped member and its other end bearing on a projection on the locking bolt provided with a suitable shoulder and a pivotally mounted tumbler lever co-acting with the shoulder and provided with an offsetbevclcd end operating transversely across the bifurcated end of the plate.
