Description

EDGAR W. LUNDY, OF ORADELL, NEW JERSEY.
SPIGOT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patentecl Sept. 26, 1911.
Application fi1ed August 15, 1910. Serial N0. 577,166.
T0 all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, EDGAR W. LUNDY, a citizen of the United States, residing ab Oradell, in the county 0f Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spigots, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to spigots, and has special reference t0 improved means for locking the spigot so that the contents of a barrel can not be tampered with.
Referring t0 the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view 0f the spigot constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a portion of the device shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the operating handle 0f the spigot removed. F ig. 4 is a view in longitudinal section 0f the spigot. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings 1 indicates the tube of the spigot Which is formed with a tapering end 2 in order that it may be driven into the bung hole of a barrel and wit-h a depending discharge nozzle 3. Mounted in the tube 1 is a vert1cal rotary plug 4 havin a transverse opening 5 in its lower end wh1ch is adapted to communicate with the passageway 5 of the tap. The lower end 0f the plug 4, which projects across the passageway 5' of the tap is secured in place in any suitable manner as for exarnple by securing the lower end of the plug 4 and having a catch 7 bearing against the under side of the tap 1. The upper end of the plug 4 is formed with cut-away portions 8, said upper end being straddlecl by the U-shaped end 9 01: a short handle 10, which is pivotedto the plug by means 0f pivot pin 11. The forward end 01: the handle 10 is formed in a longitudinal slot 12 which, when the handle 10 is swung down to the position shown in Fig. 1 is adapted t0 straddle the cut-away end 13 of the tap 1. In this position the handle may be lockecl by any suitable means, as for example by means o1 a wire 14 extending through a hole 15 in the end of the tap 1, and locked by means of a seal 16 er padlock if desired. In order that the spigot may not be left accidentally turned on suitable means are provided for this, which consists as here shown preferably, of stops 17 and 18 on the tap 1 between which is adapted to swing a lateral arm er pin 19 projecting from the pin 4, thereby perrnitting 015 a quarter turn only of the plug 4, t-he pin 17 serving as a stop against which the pin 19 abuts when the plug has made a quarter turn to close the tap end bring the arm 10 in osition to be locked in the tap. When the arm 10 is raised out of engagement with the tap the plug 4 can be only turned to open the tap in a quarter revolution on the pin 19 and abut against the step 18.
I-Iaving described tl1e invention, what I claim is:
A spigot consisting of a tap provicled at its outer end with a reduced portion, a rotary plug provided at its upper end with a recluced portion, said reduced portion forming a pair 0f inclinecl shoulders, a handle having a bifurcated end und a beveled rest shoulder, pivoted t0 the feduced Portion of saicl plug, said handle also being bifurcated at its free end and provided with a rest shoulder for engagement with t-he reduced portion of said tap, and locking rneans carried by the tap.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDGAR W. LUNDY.
Witnesses:
WILLIAM H. WESTERVELT, JAMES A. ROMEYN.
